Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

By morning, news of the ruined engagement party had sent shockwaves through the city’s underground and corporate circles alike.
The media reported that the engagement between Alessandro Moretti and socialite Vanessa Cole had been abruptly canceled due to "irreconcilable personal differences." But on the streets, everyone knew the truth: Vanessa had been exposed as a fraud and a spy, and the Cole family was being systematically dismantled by Moretti’s legal and financial teams.
Inside the estate, my life transformed overnight.
Emma and I were moved into a sunlit suite on the third floor with high arched windows overlooking the ocean cliffs. Beautiful new clothes were delivered for Emma, and private doctors arrived to treat her fever, which broke by mid-afternoon.
Despite the luxury, I felt out of place. I wasn't used to sitting on plush velvet sofas while other maids brought me tea.
At dusk, a soft knock came at my door.
Alessandro walked in, dressed in a simple black sweater and trousers, looking exhausted but focused. He carried a small wooden toy horse, which he handed to Emma. She squealed with delight and immediately ran to the rug to play with it.
"She looks much better," Alessandro said, standing beside me near the window.
"Her fever is gone," I smiled softly. "Thank you, Mr. Moretti. For everything."
"Call me Alessandro, Elena. Please." He looked out at the ocean waves crashing against the rocks below. "The Cole family isn't going down quietly. Julian Cole fled when my men moved in last night. He’s gone into hiding with the Sabatinis."
A chill ran down my spine. "Are we in danger?"
Alessandro turned to face me, his gray eyes burning with an intense, unyielding light. "I won't let anyone touch you or Emma. But Sabatini knows that you were the one who broke Vanessa’s cover. You are a witness to their plot."
He reached out, his large, calloused hand gently touching my wrist. The warmth of his skin sent a sudden, violent jolt through my chest.
"I spent years surrounding myself with people who lied to me because they wanted my power," Alessandro whispered, his thumb lightly tracing my pulse point. "Vanessa, her brother, even my own advisors. Then a quiet woman who scrubs my floors stood up in front of three hundred people and risked everything just to protect what was real."
"I did it for Daniel... and for Emma," I choked out, tears stinging my eyes. "Daniel was killed because he stayed silent about corruption. I promised myself I would never be silent when a lie was hurting someone."
Alessandro leaned in slightly, his dark aura melting into a profound, fierce respect. "You have more courage than any man in that ballroom last night, Elena."

Before I could answer, Marco burst into the room without knocking, his face grim.
"Boss! We have a problem," Marco said, his hand resting on his sidearm. "A truck just rammed through the outer security gate at the north road. It’s Julian Cole and a dozen Sabatini hitmen. They’re breaching the grounds!"
