Chapter 5 - The Crucible of Hearts

The auditorium went so quiet you could hear a pin drop on the carpet. Every camera lens swung around, zooming in on the billionaire kneeling before his assistant.
Claire’s breath hitched in her throat. Her hands flew to her mouth. "Ethan... what are you doing? Everyone is watching..."
Ethan reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a simple, elegant velvet box. He popped it open, revealing a breathtaking ring featuring a rare blue diamond surrounded by delicate platinum bands.
"Yesterday, I was almost tricked into a marriage built on lies, greed, and murder," Ethan said, his deep voice carrying through the quiet hall. "I thought my world was full of monsters. But then you shattered a glass, took a cut to your hand, and showed me what true loyalty looks like."
Tears spilled over Claire’s eyelashes, glittering like diamonds under the stage lights.
"You saved my life, Claire," Ethan continued, his voice trembling with raw emotion. "You protected my family when everyone else tried to tear it apart. I don't want you as my assistant. I don't want you as my employee. I want you as my partner, my equal, and my wife."
"Ethan..." Claire choked out, her heart pounding against her ribs so hard it felt like it might burst. "I'm just a hotel worker... people will say—"
"Let them say whatever they want," Ethan interrupted fiercely. "I don't care about titles, status, or money. I care about the woman who stood between me and death without asking for anything in return."
He looked up into her eyes, his gray gaze burning with pure, unshakeable love. "Claire Miller, will you marry me?"
Claire looked at the man who had protected her sister, fought off his own family for her, and looked at her as if she were the only person in the universe.
She didn't hesitate.
"Yes!" Claire sobbed, dropping to her knees in front of him and throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes, Ethan! A thousand times yes!"
Ethan wrapped his arms tightly around her waist, lifting her into his lap as he brought his lips down onto hers in a deep, passionate kiss.
The auditorium erupted into a deafening roar of thunderous applause and cheering. Cameras flashed frantically, capturing the iconic image that would dominate every front page in the world the following morning: “The Hotel Maid Who Saved the Billionaire Wins His Heart.”
Three months later.
The atmosphere at the St. Regis Resort was entirely different from the dark, chaotic day of the failed wedding.
The sun was shining brightly over the ocean, casting a golden glow across the private beach where hundreds of white orchid arches lined the velvet aisle.
Inside the private bridal suite, Claire stood before a full-length mirror. She wore a breathtaking, custom-made silk gown with a long, flowing train embroidered with delicate silver lace. Her blonde hair fell in soft, elegant waves around her shoulders, topped with a delicate diamond tiara.
Beside her stood her younger sister, Lily. Lily looked healthy, vibrant, her cheeks pink with full recovery thanks to the advanced medical treatment funded by Ethan.
"You look like a real queen, Claire," Lily whispered, her eyes filled with happy tears as she adjusted Claire’s veil.
"I don't feel like a queen, Lily," Claire smiled, turning to hug her sister tightly. "I just feel like the luckiest girl in the world."
A gentle knock sounded at the door, and the head of the hotel staff—Claire’s former manager—peeked his head inside. He looked nervously at Claire, holding a small silver tray with two champagne flutes.
"Mrs. Vance... excuse me, Miss Miller," the manager stammered politely. "Mr. Vance requested a pre-ceremony toast with you."
Claire smiled warmly. "Thank you, Arthur. You don't have to be so formal with me. I used to clean your office, remember?"
"You're the boss's wife now, ma'am," the manager chuckled nervously, setting the tray down before exiting.
Seconds later, the door opened, and Ethan walked into the room.
He looked impossibly handsome in a tailored black tuxedo. But as his eyes landed on Claire, he stopped in his tracks, his breath completely catching in his throat.
"My God, Claire..." Ethan murmured, stepping toward her as if drawn by a gravitational force. "You are... stunning."
Claire blushed, stepping into his open arms. Ethan wrapped his hands around her waist, pulling her close, resting his forehead against hers.

"No poison today?" Claire teased softly, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
Ethan laughed—a rich, genuine sound that filled the room with warmth. "Only pure love, my darling."
