Chapter 4 - The Gala of Retribution

The grand auditorium of the Vance Tower was filled to capacity. Over three hundred major shareholders, reporters, and board members sat in rows of velvet seats, the air thick with tension.
On the main stage sat the board of directors. Marcus Vance occupied the central seat, looking like a king preparing to claim his crown.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Marcus announced into the microphone, his voice smooth and commanding. "Due to recent personal scandals surrounding my nephew, Ethan Vance, the stability of Vance Financial has been called into question. Stocks have dropped four percent since yesterday's disastrous wedding incident. Therefore, under Article 4 of the corporate charter, I call for an immediate vote to remove Ethan Vance as Chief Executive Officer."
Murmurs rippled through the audience. Reporters leaned forward, cameras flashing continuously.
"Before we vote," Marcus added with a smug smile, "I will be voting my thirty percent share, along with thirty percent managed by the Swiss Phoenix Trust, giving me a sixty percent majority. The motion passes."
"Not so fast, Uncle."
The heavy double doors at the back of the auditorium slammed open.
Ethan walked down the center aisle, looking imposing in a dark midnight-blue suit. But he wasn't walking alone.
Walking beside him, wearing a stunning tailored emerald-green silk dress with her hair swept up in an elegant chignon, was Claire. She held a sleek black leather binder securely in her hands.
Marcus laughed aloud on stage. "Ethan, this is a board meeting, not a circus! You cannot bring your maid here to delay the inevitable!"
"She's not my maid, Marcus," Ethan said, reaching the foot of the stage. He took Claire’s hand in his, holding it high for every camera in the room to see. "She is the newly appointed Vice Chair of my personal holding firm. And she has something the board needs to see."
Claire stepped up to the podium. Despite the hundreds of eyes fixed on her, she didn't tremble. She opened the binder, placing a stack of documents onto the digital projector scanner.
Instantly, the massive screens behind the stage lit up with banking records, offshore trust deeds, and forensic handwriting analysis.
"These are the original incorporation files for the Phoenix Trust," Claire announced into the microphone, her clear voice echoing across the silent hall. "Registered in Geneva ten years ago. As you can see on page four, the ultimate beneficial owner of the trust is indeed Mr. Marcus Vance."
The crowd erupted into shocked gasps. Marcus stood up so fast his chair fell backward with a heavy thud.
"That's a lie! Those documents are forged!" Marcus roared.
"Page six contains your personal tax evasion records, Mr. Vance," Claire continued smoothly, tapping the screen. "Showing that you used the Phoenix Trust to siphon forty million dollars from Vance Financial's pension fund over the last five years... including the two million dollars paid last week to purchase the military-grade toxin used by Chloe DuPont."
"Security! Arrest that woman!" Marcus shrieked, his face turning an angry shade of purple.
"The only person being arrested today is you, Marcus," Ethan said coldly.
From the side entrances of the auditorium, six federal agents in dark suits marched down the aisles, led by the Chief of Federal Investigations.
"Marcus Vance," the lead agent announced, holding up a federal warrant. "You are under arrest for corporate fraud, market manipulation, attempted murder, and conspiracy."
Marcus backed away toward the edge of the stage, his eyes darting frantically around the room, looking for an escape route. His gaze landed on Claire.
With a sudden, desperate roar, Marcus pulled a small pocket knife from his jacket and lunged off the stage straight toward Claire!
"Claire, watch out!" someone screamed.
Claire didn't even have time to step back. But she didn't need to.
Ethan stepped in front of her like an impenetrable wall of steel. He caught Marcus’s wrist mid-air, squeezing it so hard the knife clattered onto the floor. Before Marcus could react, Ethan delivered a devastating right hook straight to his jaw.
CRACK!
Marcus flew backward onto the floor, knocked completely unconscious.
The auditorium broke into wild cheers and applause as federal agents rushed forward to handcuff the disgraced uncle, dragging his limp body out of the room.
Ethan turned to Claire. He took her trembling face in both of his hands, inspecting every inch of her. "Are you hurt? Did he touch you?"
Claire smiled through her tears, placing her hands over his. "I'm safe, Ethan. We won."
Ethan looked at her—at the brilliant, courageous woman who had saved his life twice—and felt something deep inside his chest break open forever.

"We haven't won yet," Ethan whispered, his gray eyes shining with fierce emotion. "Not until I do this."
In front of three hundred shareholders, fifty news networks, and millions of viewers watching the live broadcast, Ethan Vance dropped onto one knee on the floor of the auditorium.
