Chapter 2 - The Lion’s Den

Within two hours, the news had shattered every financial network in the country. “Vance Heir Escapes Wedding Day Assassination,” read the headlines, accompanied by blurry photos of Chloe DuPont being led away in handcuffs.

At the Vance Estate—a fortress-like mansion resting on the cliffs overlooking the sea—the mood was suffocatingly tense.

Ethan sat behind the massive mahogany desk in his private study. His tuxedo jacket was gone, his crisp white shirt unbuttoned at the collar, sleeves rolled up to his elbows. Opposite him sat Claire. She was wearing a simple gray sweater provided by the estate staff, a clean white bandage wrapped tightly around her hand.

"Your sister, Lily," Ethan said, glancing at a digital tablet on his desk. "She has a rare autoimmune disorder. She’s currently being treated at the city general hospital, but her treatment costs six thousand dollars a month. That’s why you took double shifts at the St. Regis."

Claire swallowed hard, her fingers twisting in her lap. "Yes, Mr. Vance. I didn't mean to pry into your family matters today. I just... I couldn't watch a man get murdered in front of hundreds of people."

"You showed more courage than anyone in that ballroom," Ethan said softly. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on the desk. "Chloe’s family didn't work alone, Claire."

Claire blinked. "What do you mean?"

"The poison used in that bottle was a specialized military-grade compound," Ethan revealed, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low register. "It requires high-level government clearance or extreme wealth to acquire on the black market. Chloe’s family was broke. They couldn't afford that poison on their own. Someone funded them."

A cold shiver ran down Claire’s spine. "Someone inside your family?"

Ethan nodded slowly. "My family’s conglomerate is worth twelve billion dollars. If I had died today without an heir, control of the company would have defaulted to the board of directors... which is chaired by my uncle, Marcus Vance."

Claire’s eyes widened in horror. "The man who revealed the insurance policy today?"

"Marcus played the hero today to cover his tracks," Ethan said, a bitter smile touching his lips. "He exposed Chloe because he realized she failed. If the poison had worked, he would have let her take the fall while he quietly claimed the CEO seat."

Ethan stood up, walking around the desk until he was standing directly in front of Claire. He reached out, taking her chin gently between his fingers, raising her face so she had to look him in the eyes.

"I need someone inside my household I can trust implicitly," Ethan said. "Someone who cannot be bought by my uncle. I want you to become my personal assistant, Claire. Your sister will be moved to the private wing of the Vance Medical Center tonight. All her bills will be covered by my personal account."

Claire felt tears prickling the corners of her eyes. "Mr. Vance... you don't owe me this much."

"You saved my life, Claire," Ethan murmured, his gray eyes softening as he looked down at her delicate features. "I protect what’s mine. Do we have a deal?"

Claire looked at the man who commanded empires, yet held her chin with unbelievable gentleness. "Deal."

By the next morning, Claire’s life had completely transformed.

She was moved into a spacious guest suite in the west wing of the estate. But with her new position came immediate danger.

As she walked down the grand marble hallway toward Ethan’s office carrying his morning schedule, a tall figure stepped out from the shadows, blocking her path.

It was Marcus Vance. He wore a sharp charcoal suit, his silver hair neatly styled, but his eyes were as cold as ice.

"Ah, the little heroine," Marcus purred, stepping closer until Claire was forced to back up against the wall. "Claire, isn't it?"

"Mr. Vance," Claire said, keeping her voice as steady as possible. "If you'll excuse me, I need to deliver these files to Ethan."

Marcus reached out, his heavy hand pressing against the wall right beside her head, trapping her. "You think you're clever, don't you, little girl? You dropped a glass and became a billionaire's golden girl overnight."

"I did my duty, sir," Claire replied, staring straight into his eyes without flinching.

"Listen to me carefully," Marcus whispered, leaning in so close Claire could smell the expensive cigar smoke on his breath. "Ethan is playing a game he cannot win. This family is a pit of vipers. If you stay by his side, you won't just lose your job... you'll lose your life. Take a million dollars from me today, resign, and take your sick sister out of this city."

Claire looked at Marcus's arrogant face. Six months ago, she might have been terrified. But after watching her sister fight for her life every day in a cold hospital room, Claire had built a spine of iron.

"My sister taught me never to take garbage from trash, Mr. Vance," Claire said smoothly. "And Ethan pays much better."

Marcus’s face twisted in rage. He raised his hand as if to grab her neck, but before his fingers could touch her, a loud, heavy crack echoed through the hallway.

Ethan stood five feet away, his hand still holding the heavy glass paperweight he had just hurled into the marble wall right beside Marcus's head, shattering it into dust.

"Touch her again, Uncle," Ethan said, his voice laced with pure, murderous rage, "and the next one goes through your skull."
