Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Silk

Marcus slowly lowered his hand, turning to face his nephew with a fake, effortless laugh. "Relax, Ethan. I was merely offering the young lady a generous severance package. After all, having an uneducated hotel worker handling sensitive company documents seems... foolish."

"Her education is none of your concern," Ethan snapped, stepping forward and pulling Claire behind his broad back. "Get out of my house, Marcus. The board meeting is at two o'clock. Save your breath for the shareholders."

Marcus sneered, adjusting his tie before walking away, his leather shoes clicking loudly against the marble floor.

Once Marcus vanished down the grand staircase, Ethan turned around, grabbing Claire’s shoulders. His eyes searched her face frantically. "Did he touch you?"

"No," Claire said, her heart hammering against her ribs—not from Marcus's threat, but from the fierce, protective warmth radiating from Ethan. "I'm fine, Ethan. Really."

"He's getting desperate," Ethan muttered, his jaw tightening. "The shareholders' meeting today is where he plans to launch a vote of no confidence against me, claiming the scandal with Chloe proves I am unfit to lead the company."

"Can he win the vote?" Claire asked worriedly.

"He controls thirty percent of the proxy votes," Ethan explained, leading her into his office and locking the heavy door behind them. "I control forty percent. The remaining thirty percent belongs to the mysterious 'Phoenix Trust'—an offshore fund whose owner has remained anonymous for ten years."

Claire frowned, her sharp memory suddenly sparking. "The Phoenix Trust?"

"Yes. Why?"

"When I was working at the St. Regis," Claire said quickly, her eyes lighting up, "I used to clean the private executive suites on the top floor. Three months ago, Marcus held a secret dinner with a lawyer from Switzerland. I remembered the name on the legal documents because they had a strange golden bird emblem on the leather binder—The Phoenix Trust."

Ethan froze, his gray eyes locking onto hers. "Marcus owns the Phoenix Trust?"

"Or he controls the trustee," Claire insisted. "I saw him sign a transfer order using a gold fountain pen with his initials engraved on it. If we can prove Marcus secretly owns those shares, it violates federal market manipulation laws. He'll be disqualified from voting!"

Ethan stared at her for three seconds before a slow, breathtaking smile broke across his usually stern face. He reached out, grabbing Claire’s waist, and lifted her off her feet, spinning her around in a sudden burst of excitement.

"You absolute genius!" Ethan laughed, setting her down gently.

Claire blushed deeply, her face burning as her hands rested against his broad chest. For a moment, neither of them moved. The room fell into a loaded, breathless silence. Ethan’s gaze lowered to her lips, his thumb softly tracing the curve of her cheek.

"Ethan..." Claire whispered, her breath catching.

Before he could speak, Ethan’s desk phone chimed loudly, shattering the moment.

Ethan cleared his throat, stepping back reluctantly to answer the call. "Speak."

"Mr. Vance!" his head of security reported urgently over the speaker. "We have a situation at the Vance Medical Center! Someone just tried to cut the power to the private wing where Claire’s sister is staying!"

Claire gasped, her face draining of all color. "Lily!"

"Is she safe?!" Ethan barked into the phone.

"Yes, sir! The backup generators kicked in immediately, and our guards neutralized the intruder," the security chief reported. "We captured him alive. He had a syringe of air in his pocket."

Ethan’s eyes turned pitch black with fury. He looked at Claire, who was trembling violently, tears spilling over her eyelashes.

"They tried to kill my sister..." Claire choked out, her voice breaking. "Because of me..."

Ethan walked over, wrapping his arms securely around her, pulling her small frame tight against his chest. He rested his chin on top of her head, his hands holding her so tightly she could feel the powerful beat of his heart.

"They made a mistake, Claire," Ethan growled into her hair, his voice dripping with pure vengeance. "They thought hurting your sister would make you run away. Now... I'm going to destroy every single one of them."
