Chapter 1 - The Cold Scent of Cyanide

The heavy silence inside the grand ballroom of the St. Regis Resort felt like a vacuum, sucking the air right out of everyone’s lungs. Sparkling crystal shards scattered across the pristine white marble like tiny diamonds, catching the harsh glare of the chandeliers. In the center of the mess sat a puddle of spilled vintage Dom Pérignon, fizzing unnaturally as it bubbled against the polished stone.

Ethan Vance, heir to the multi-billion-dollar Vance Financial Group, stood frozen. His tailored black tuxedo made his imposing frame look even taller, but his face had drained of all color. His hand remained outstretched in the air, right where he had been holding his glass just seconds before the maid knocked it out of his grip.

Beside him stood his bride, Chloe DuPont. She looked like a fairytale princess in a custom three-hundred-thousand-dollar French lace gown. But beneath the delicate veil, her pristine white makeup could not hide the sudden, frantic twitch in her eye.

"Ethan, darling... this is insane!" Chloe shrieked, her voice pitching up into a frantic, high-pitched treble that echoed through the silent ballroom. She pointed a French-manicured finger at the maid kneeling on the floor. "She's just a crazy hotel worker! She probably wanted to make a scene to extort money from us! Call security! Throw her out!"

"Shut up, Chloe," Ethan commanded softly. His voice wasn't loud, but it carried a deadly chill that made the surrounding guests step back in fear.

He lowered his gaze to the maid kneeling among the glass shards. Her name tag read Claire. Her uniform was slightly wrinkled, her hands were trembling violently, and a faint smear of blood was already blossoming on her palm where a sharp piece of crystal had cut her during the plunge.

"Show me the video again," Ethan ordered, stepping closer to Claire.

Claire wiped her bloody hand against her apron and held up her cracked smartphone with both hands. The video was clear, recorded from a hidden angle inside the bride's private prep suite just twenty minutes before the ceremony.

On the screen, Chloe’s delicate hands could be seen unscrewing a tiny glass vial containing a fine white powder. With practiced ease, she dumped the powder directly into the labeled bottle reserved exclusively for the groom's toast. Then, she looked toward the camera’s hidden position, her face twisted in a cold, ruthless smile that no one in the ballroom had ever seen before.

"Where did you get this video?" Ethan asked, his gray eyes darkening like a storm gathering over the ocean.

"I... I was assigned to clean the bridal suite before the grand entrance, sir," Claire stammered, her voice shaking but her posture steady. "I left my phone on the vanity to record a cleaning log video for the head housekeeper. I forgot it was running when Miss Chloe entered the room with her mother. I saw what she did when I went back to pick up my phone... I couldn't let you drink it!"

Chloe gasped, taking two steps back, her hands flying to her throat. "It’s a deepfake! Ethan, you know how advanced AI is these days! Someone paid her to ruin our wedding! Why would I poison my own husband?!"

"Because he isn't your husband yet, Chloe," a smooth, gravelly voice spoke from the edge of the stage.

Everyone turned to look. Standing near the floral arch was Marcus Vance—Ethan’s uncle and the chief legal counsel for the family empire. He pulled a black leather folder from inside his coat, his eyes fixed entirely on Chloe and her mother, who was currently trying to slip toward the exit doors.

"Security, lock the doors," Marcus barked. "No one leaves."

Four towering security guards immediately blocked the massive mahogany doors, heavy iron locks clicking into place.

"Four days ago," Marcus continued, opening the folder, "Chloe’s mother took out a twenty-million-dollar life insurance policy on Ethan in Europe, naming Chloe as the sole beneficiary upon his death... provided they were legally married for at least one minute. And according to the officiant, you two signed the marriage license in the holding room ten minutes ago."

A collective, scandalized gasp erupted from the five hundred elite guests packing the room. Cameras began flashing instantly as guests dropped all social decorum to record the historic collapse of the city's most anticipated union.

Ethan turned to face his bride. He reached out and grabbed Chloe’s veil, ripping the expensive fabric off her head with one sharp yank. Chloe cried out in fear, her pristine image disintegrating in seconds.

"You didn't want my heart, Chloe," Ethan whispered, leaning down until his lips were inches from her ear. "You wanted my pulse to stop."

"Ethan... please!" Chloe sobbed, dropping to her knees on the marble floor, her expensive gown soaking up the spilled, poisoned wine. "My family is broke! My father owes fifty million to loan sharks! They threatened to kill my brother if I didn't get the money! It wasn't my idea! My mother made me do it!"

"Drag them both to the holding office," Ethan said, turning his back on her as if she were nothing more than trash on the street. "Call the federal authorities."

As security grabbed Chloe and her screaming mother, pulling them away through the crowd, Ethan stood alone in the center of the ballroom. The music had stopped. The dream wedding was a crime scene.

His eyes fell back on Claire, who was still on her knees, desperately trying to pick up the largest pieces of broken glass so no one would step on them.

Ethan walked over, knelt down on the cold marble beside her, and gently grabbed her wrist, stopping her bleeding hand.

"What is your name?" Ethan asked gently.

"Claire... Claire Miller, sir," she whispered, looking up into his stormy gray eyes.

"You saved my life, Claire Miller," Ethan said softly. "And your life in this hotel ends today."

Claire’s heart dropped into her stomach. "Sir... please don't fire me! I have a younger sister in the hospital! I need this job!"

Ethan looked at her with an intensity that made her breath catch in her throat. "I'm not firing you, Claire. I'm taking you with me."
