Chapter 4 - The Basement Siege

The basement was damp, smelling of earth and old pipes, with only a single, flickering bulb illuminating the concrete walls. Colt stood at the bottom of the stairs, listening to the heavy footsteps muffled by the floorboards above. Victor’s men were clearing the house, room by room. It wouldn't take them long to find the basement door.

"Why are you doing this?" Sarah whispered, tears streaming down her face as she held Leo close to her chest. "You don't even know us. You could have just ridden away."

Colt didn't look back at her; his eyes were glued to the top of the stairs. "A long time ago, I couldn't save my own family from people like them," he said, his voice dropping to a gravelly, emotional whisper. "I promised myself I’d never let it happen again. Today, you're my family."

Suddenly, the basement door rattled. A heavy boot kicked it, splintering the frame. Colt moved with lightning speed. He grabbed an old iron pipe leaning against the water heater and positioned himself right beneath the stairs.

The door gave way. The first enforcer stepped down, his flashlight beam cutting through the darkness. Before the man could raise his weapon, Colt swung the iron pipe with lethal precision, striking the man's knees. As the enforcer collapsed, Colt grabbed his assault rifle and disarmed him, shoving him into the darkness.

"They're downstairs!" a voice shouted from above. Gunfire erupted. Bullets tore through the wooden floorboards, showering Colt, Sarah, and Leo with splinters and drywall dust. Colt fired back through the ceiling, forcing the attackers to retreat momentarily.

But Colt knew they were trapped. The basement had only one small, rectangular coal chute window leading to the backyard. It was big enough for Sarah and Leo, but Colt’s massive frame would never fit.

"Sarah, get Leo out through the chute. Now!" Colt commanded, firing another burst up the stairs to keep the enforcers at bay.

"What about you?" she cried out.

"Just go! I'll buy you the time!" Colt roared as the basement stairs began to creak under the weight of multiple men rushing down at once.
