Chapter 7 - A House Becomes a Home

Three months later. Early summer.

The afternoon sun streamed through the high floor-to-ceiling windows of the Vance estate, painting the polished hardwood floors in warm, golden light.

The heavy, suffocating tension that had hung over the house for years was entirely gone. In its place was the sweet sound of piano music drifting from the living room, accompanied by little Leo’s happy laughter.

Maria sat on the piano bench beside Leo, guiding his small fingers over the white keys as they practiced a simple melody together. She wore a sun-yellow summer dress, her dark hair falling softly over her shoulders, her face glowing with genuine happiness.

The front door opened, and Arthur stepped into the foyer.

He wasn't wearing his formal corporate suit today; he wore a comfortable navy sweater and trousers, holding a large box of fresh pastries from the local bakery in one hand and a bouquet of red roses in the other.

"Daddy!" Leo cheered, sliding off the piano bench and racing across the room.

Arthur dropped to one knee, catching his son in a tight hug and lifting him high into the air. "Hey, tiger! How was piano practice today?"

"Maria taught me how to play the whole song!" Leo boasted proudly, pointing toward the piano. "She said I'm getting super fast!"

"Is that so?" Arthur smiled, setting the boy down and handing him the bakery box. "Go take these pastries into the kitchen and ask the chef to plate them for tea."

"Yay! Pastries!" Leo squealed, carrying the box carefully into the kitchen with a huge grin on his face.

Arthur stood up, his dark eyes turning toward the living room where Maria was standing near the piano, holding a cleaning cloth, watching him with a soft, gentle smile.

Arthur walked across the room, carrying the bouquet of red roses. He stopped right in front of her, the warmth in his gaze making her heart skip a beat.

"These are for you," Arthur said softly, handing her the flowers.

Maria took the roses, smelling their sweet fragrance, her cheeks flushing a delicate pink. "Mr. Vance... you shouldn't have. They're beautiful."

"Arthur," he corrected her gently, stepping a inch closer. "I think we’ve passed the point of 'Mr. Vance,' don't you think?"

Maria looked up into his deep, expressive eyes, her heart fluttering like a bird. "Arthur," she whispered, the name sounding sweet and natural on her lips.

Arthur reached out, his warm fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear. His touch was soft, reverent, filled with a tenderness that made Maria’s breath catch.

"I talked to my lawyers today, Maria," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a low, intimate register. "The final annulment papers have been signed by the judge. The legal battles with Victor and Elena are officially over. They are both facing long prison sentences, and they will never be able to threaten this house again."

"I'm so glad, Arthur," Maria said softly, her brown eyes shining with happiness. "You and Leo finally have the peace you deserve."

"We do," Arthur agreed, his gaze locked on her lips before moving back up to meet her eyes. "But there’s still one thing missing."

Maria tilted her head, confused. "Missing? What do you mean?"

Arthur reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.

Maria gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as her eyes widened in complete shock.

Arthur didn't drop to one knee like a fairy-tale prince; instead, he took her hand, holding it firmly between both of his palms, looking into her soul with an honesty that undid every defense she had left.

"When I threw Elena out of this house three months ago," Arthur said, his voice trembling slightly with raw emotion, "I told my son that from then on, only people who loved him would live here. I didn't realize until these past three months that you didn't just save my son's trust fund, Maria. You saved my heart. You turned this cold, empty stone house into a real home."

Tears of pure joy welling in her eyes, Maria looked at the man she had secretly loved for months—the powerful, noble man who had fought like a lion to protect her family when she was helpless.

"Arthur..." she choked out.

"I don't want you to be our nanny anymore, Maria," Arthur whispered, opening the velvet box to reveal a breathtaking diamond ring that sparkled like sunlight on water. "I want you to be my partner. My wife. A real mother to Leo. Will you marry me?"

Maria let out a sob of pure happiness, stepping forward and throwing her arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder.

"Yes!" she cried out, her voice ringing through the sunlit living room. "Yes, Arthur! A thousand times yes!"

Arthur let out a triumphant laugh, wrapping his strong arms around her waist, lifting her off her feet and spinning her around as she laughed through her tears.

When he set her down, he took the ring from the box and slid it onto her finger before gently cupping her face in his hands and pressing his lips to hers in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their future together.

"Yay!"

A small voice cheered from the doorway.

They parted softly, looking over to see Leo standing in the entrance of the living room, holding a half-eaten pastry, a massive smile on his small face.

"Are you going to be my real mommy now, Maria?!" Leo asked, jumping up and down.

Maria walked over to the boy, dropping to her knees and pulling him into a tight, warm hug. "I’m going to be right here with you forever, Leo. I promise."

May you like

Arthur walked over and knelt beside them, wrapping his big arms around both his wife-to-be and his son, pulling them close against his chest.

The golden afternoon sun shone brightly through the tall windows, casting a warm light over the three of them. The storm was over, the dark shadows had been banished forever, and inside the Vance estate, love, safety, and true happiness had finally found their permanent home.
