Chapter 2 - The Whispers on the Board

By eight o'clock the following morning, the storm had passed, leaving the city washed in a cold, grey light.
Inside the high-rise corporate headquarters of Vance Global, downtown Chicago, the atmosphere was even colder. Arthur Vance sat at the head of the massive glass conference table, surrounded by twelve senior board members. His suit was immaculately pressed, his expression inscrutable, but the tension in the room was thick enough to choke on.
At the far end of the table sat Victor Sterling—Elena’s father.
Victor was a man in his late sixties with silver hair, sharp features, and eyes like flint. He sat with his hands folded over his gold-tipped cane, glaring across the length of the table at his son-in-law.
"This is an absolute disgrace, Arthur!" Victor barked, slamming his cane against the carpeted floor. "You had my daughter escorted off your residential property by private security like a common criminal! You’ve leaked rumors to the press that she tried to embezzle from her own son’s trust!"
"They aren't rumors, Victor," Arthur said calmly, sliding a thick blue folder across the glass table. "Those are the certified bank audit reports from the forensic accounting firm I hired three days ago. Your daughter forged my signature on three separate financial instruments and attempted to move three million dollars into an offshore account."
Victor didn't even look at the folder. "Elena was acting under my direction to restructure family assets ahead of the quarterly tax filings! It was an internal accounting reorganization!"
"She was moving money out of a protected child’s trust into a non-audited personal account," Arthur countered, leaning forward, his voice dropping into a deadly, measured tone. "That is not restructuring, Victor. That is grand larceny under state and federal law. And if you just admitted on the record that she was acting under your direction, then my legal team will be happy to name you as a co-conspirator in the formal complaint we are filing with the SEC this afternoon."
A murmur ran through the assembled board members. Several of the senior executives shifted uncomfortably in their leather chairs, exchanging uneasy glances.
Victor’s eyes narrowed into slit-like points. "You think you can bully me out of this company, boy? My family’s equity built the foundation of Vance Global! If you file those charges, I will call an emergency shareholder vote to have you removed as Chief Executive Officer on the grounds of gross mismanagement and personal instability!"
"You're welcome to try," Arthur replied without flinching. "But to call a vote, you need a fifty-one percent majority. And as of seven o'clock this morning, the board’s independent ethics committee has temporarily suspended your voting rights pending the outcome of the fraud investigation."
Victor stood up so fast his leather chair slid backward against the wall. "You insolent bastard!"
"This meeting is adjourned," Arthur said, standing up and buttoning his jacket. "Gentlemen, please review the financial audit in your folders. We will reconvene on Friday to discuss replacing Mr. Sterling’s seat on the executive board."
Without waiting for a response, Arthur walked out of the boardroom, his long strides carrying him down the carpeted hallway toward his private office. His chief legal counsel, a sharp woman named Rachel Ross, fell into step beside him.
"That was a dangerous move, Arthur," Rachel said under her breath. "Victor still has deep connections with the regulatory agencies in the state. He won't just sit back and take this. He's going to use Elena to attack you through the family court system."
"Let him try," Arthur said, pushing open his office door. "My home is secure, and my son is safe."
"Is he?" Rachel paused at the doorway, looking at Arthur with a serious expression. "Arthur, I’ve seen the preliminary reports Elena’s lawyers filed this morning. They aren't going after the money anymore. They know the financial paper trail is too clean. They're going after your domestic life."
Arthur stopped near his mahogany desk, turning to face his attorney. "What do you mean?"
"They are filing an emergency custody petition claiming you are maintaining an improper, immoral environment for Leo," Rachel explained smoothly, pulling a document from her leather portfolio. "They are naming your nanny, Maria, as the central figure. They claim she has been living in the house as your undisclosed mistress and that she orchestrated the rift between you and Elena to gain control over the estate."
Arthur felt a surge of hot, unadulterated rage burn through his veins. "That is a disgustingly transparent lie! Maria is an employee! She has done nothing but protect my son from Elena’s neglect!"
"It doesn't matter if it's a lie, Arthur," Rachel warned, stepping into the room and closing the door. "In family court, perception is everything. If Elena’s team can paint Maria as a gold-digging home-wrecker who infiltrated your house to manipulate you, a judge might issue a temporary custody order removing Leo from your care until a full investigation is completed."
Arthur gripped the edge of his desk so hard his knuckles turned white. The thought of little Leo being ripped away from the only safe environment he had ever known—and placed into the hands of Elena and Victor—made his blood run cold.
"What do we need to do?" Arthur asked, his voice tight.
"First, you need to protect Maria," Rachel said directly. "If Elena’s lawyers get to her, they will grill her until she breaks or try to buy her off. Second, you need to ensure that there is absolutely no impropriety between you and her. Not even a hint of it. If the court senses even a shred of romantic scandal, it will play right into Victor’s hands."
Arthur looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows of his office, gazing out over the grey skyline of Chicago. He thought of Maria’s dark, expressive eyes, the way her soft voice filled the dark hallways of his house with music, and the fierce, protective instinct she had shown when standing up to Elena.

He realized, with a sudden pang of guilt, that the boundaries of a purely professional relationship had already begun to blur in his heart long before last night's blowup.
"I will protect her, Rachel," Arthur said softly, his resolve hardening into solid stone. "Whatever it takes."
