Chapter 4 - The Unbreakable Oath

The heavy rain returned by late afternoon, darkening the sky to a bruised, purple hue as Arthur’s black SUV pulled up the long driveway of the Vance estate.

Arthur stepped out into the garage, shaking the moisture from his coat. The workday had been a grueling battle of legal maneuvers and tense corporate posturing, but all he wanted now was to step inside his home and see his son—and Maria.

As he opened the interior door leading into the mudroom, he immediately felt that something was wrong.

The house was completely dark. There were no lights on in the kitchen, no sounds of cartoons playing from the family room, and no sweet aroma of dinner cooking on the stove.

"Maria?" Arthur called out, his voice echoing nervously through the quiet hallways. "Leo?"

"Daddy!"

A small figure burst out from the library near the end of the hall. Leo ran toward his father, throwing his little arms around Arthur’s legs. Arthur immediately dropped to his knees, wrapping his arms around his son, checking him over with anxious eyes.

"Hey, buddy! What's wrong? Why are all the lights off?" Arthur asked gently.

"Maria said we had to play the silent game," Leo whispered, pointing toward the dark library. "She’s sitting in the chair. She’s been crying all day, Daddy."

Arthur’s heart slammed against his ribs. He stood up, taking Leo by the hand, and walked quickly into the dimly lit library.

Maria sat in a deep leather armchair by the cold fireplace. She was wearing her coat, her legs pulled up to her chest, her face pale and streaked with dried tears. On the small coffee table in front of her lay the damp manila envelope that had been dropped at the front gate hours earlier.

"Maria," Arthur said, his voice laced with immediate concern. He turned to his son. "Leo, go up to your room and start setting up your Lego sets. I'll be up in a few minutes, okay?"

Leo looked between his father and Maria, nodded obediently, and scurried up the stairs.

The moment Leo’s footsteps faded on the upper floor, Arthur hurried across the library and knelt beside Maria’s chair. He reached out, his warm hands gently taking her trembling fingers in his own.

"Maria, what happened? Look at me, please."

Maria looked up, her brown eyes wide with a mixture of terror, guilt, and profound sorrow. "Mr. Vance... you need to fire me. Right now. You need to tell the police I left, and you need to keep me away from Leo."

Arthur frowned, his grip on her hands tightening firmly. "What are you talking about? Did Elena come here?"

"No," Maria sobbed, a fresh wave of tears breaking free. She reached for the manila envelope on the table with her shaking hand and thrust it into Arthur's chest. "They found my mother. Elena’s private investigators dug into my family's records in Texas. They found an old bank account from my late uncle... it was linked to something illegal years ago. My mother didn't know, Mr. Vance! She’s innocent! But Elena is threatening to report her to the immigration authorities and the federal prosecutor unless I sign a statement saying you paid me to frame her!"

Arthur opened the envelope, his dark eyes scanning the documents inside. The papers contained detailed financial records of Maria’s mother, accompanied by a drafted affidavit accusing Arthur of bribery, fraud, and emotional abuse.

As Arthur read through the horrifying blackmail attempt, his face transformed into a mask of pure, terrifying rage. The veins on his temples throbbed, his jaw clenched so tight his muscles trembled.

"They came to my home," Arthur whispered, his voice dangerously quiet. "They threatened your family to get to mine."

"They gave me until six o'clock," Maria wept, hanging her head. "I can't let them arrest my mother, Mr. Vance... she’s all I have left in this world! But I can't sign this paper! I can't lie and help them take Leo away from you! I don't know what to do... I don't know what to do..."

Arthur reached out, taking Maria’s face softly in his hands, forcing her to look directly into his eyes.

"Look at me, Maria," Arthur commanded softly, his voice trembling with an intense, raw emotion. "Listen to every word I am about to say to you."

Maria blinked through her tears, looking into his deep, fierce gaze.

"You are not going to sign that paper," Arthur declared, his voice ringing with absolute certainty. "And your mother is not going to go to prison."

"Mr. Vance, you don't understand how powerful Victor Sterling is—"

"I understand exactly who Victor Sterling is," Arthur interrupted, his thumbs gently wiping the warm tears from her cheeks. "He thinks he can use fear to break people. He thinks everyone has a price or a weakness he can crush. But he doesn't know who he's dealing with anymore."

Arthur stood up, pulling his phone from his coat pocket and speed-dialing a number. He stood in the center of the dark library, his tall frame looming like a protective shield over Maria.

"Rachel," Arthur said into the phone the moment his attorney answered. "I need you to contact our corporate investigative team in Texas immediately. Elena Sterling just attempted to blackmail my employee using a quiet title account in San Antonio."

He paused, listening to Rachel’s quick response, before continuing in a voice that left no room for doubt.

"I want our legal team to file an emergency federal injunction against Victor and Elena Sterling for extortion, witness tampering, and obstruction of justice. And Rachel? Contact the top immigration defense firm in Austin. Place Maria Sanchez’s mother, Rosa Sanchez, under full legal retainer funded entirely by my personal accounts. Secure her a permanent legal defense team before six o'clock tonight."

Maria gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as she stared at Arthur in disbelief.

Arthur ended the call, tossed his phone onto the table, and walked back over to Maria. He dropped back down to his knees, taking both of her hands in his, looking up at her with an intensity that made her breath catch in her throat.

"I told you last night that I would never let anyone harm my child's future," Arthur said, his voice soft, deep, and steady. "That vow includes you, Maria. You protected my son when no one else would. You stood up to a woman who terrified this entire house. I swear to you on my life, on my family’s name, I will spend every dime I own to protect your mother and keep you safe."

Maria looked at the powerful man kneeling before her on the cold library floor—a man who had every reason to save himself, yet was risking everything to shelter her.

"Why?" Maria whispered, her voice trembling. "Why would you do all of this for a nanny?"

Arthur looked at her—at her soft brown eyes, her honest face, her pure heart—and a gentle, breathtaking smile touched his lips.

"Because you aren't just a nanny to us, Maria," Arthur admitted softly, his fingers gently interlocking with hers. "You are the heart of this house. And I am not letting anyone tear our heart away."
