Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Ledger

The investigation began in absolute secrecy. Dante deployed his most elite cyber-security teams to infiltrate the private network of Dr. Elliot Ferris, while Bianca used her remaining backdoors into Romano Continental to track the family’s medical expenditures over the last five years.

What they found within forty-eight hours wasn't a medical file; it was a paper trail of blood and corporate theft.

Bianca sat in Dante’s private study, her laptop screen illuminating the dark room. Dante stood behind her, his hands resting on her shoulders, his grip a solid, comforting weight.

"Look at this, Dante," Bianca said, her fingers flying over the keyboard. "Three years ago, right after my twenty-fourth birthday, my grandfather’s original trust fund was scheduled to liquidate. According to the original bylaws from 1950, the primary corporate voting shares of Romano Continental don't go to the eldest son. They go to the firstborn child who holds an active executive position in the logistics network."

Dante’s eyes narrowed as he scanned the digital ledger. "That’s you. Not your cousins. Not your uncles. You."

"Exactly," Bianca said, her voice trembling with a mixture of rage and betrayal. "But there was a codicil added by my grandfather in his final days. If the qualified heir is physically incapable of producing a biological successor to continue the family name, the voting shares default automatically to the secondary line—which is my Uncle Raymond and his son, Anthony."

Dante let out a low, dangerous whistle. "So if you are fertile, you own the entire Romano empire. The moment you marry Adrian Caruso and have a child, your father and your uncles lose complete control of the shipping terminals and the hundreds of millions in the offshore trusts."

"They paid Dr. Ferris two million dollars to fake the diagnosis," Bianca whispered, staring at the encrypted bank transfers they had pulled from Ferris’s offshore accounts in the Caymans. "And it gets worse. Look at the date of my original medical check-up three years ago. The one where they claimed I had a minor appendix issue. They didn't fix an appendix, Dante. They ran a diagnostic sequence to check my fertility markers. They knew I was perfectly healthy. They’ve been planning this layout for years."

"They didn't just sell you, Bianca," Dante said, his voice vibrating with an intense, quiet rage that made the room feel ice-cold. "They committed corporate treason against their own blood to keep you from taking your throne. And they used the Caruso family to validate the lie."

The door to the study opened sharply. Carter, Dante’s lead intelligence officer, stepped inside, his face pale and grim.

"Boss," Carter said, looking at Bianca with an expression of deep concern. "We have a problem. Dr. Elliot Ferris was just found dead in his Upper East Side townhome. The police are calling it a suicide, but our scouts on the scene say the security cameras were wiped ten minutes before the body was discovered. It was a cleanup crew."

Bianca stood up, her hand instinctively dropping to her stomach, where her child—the ultimate proof of their treachery—was growing. The stakes had just shifted from corporate fraud to cold-blooded murder.

"They know we’re looking," Bianca said, her gray eyes flashing with a sudden, lethal focus. "They know the lie is unraveling."

Dante reached down, his large hand wrapping around hers, his grip unyielding. "Let them know," he said, his hazel eyes burning. "It’s time to call a family meeting."
