Chapter 2 - The Iron Sovereign

The penthouse of the Vance Tower rose sixty stories above Manhattan, a monument of black glass and polished steel that seemed to pierce the low, foggy night sky. When the private elevator doors opened, Bianca stepped out into an environment that looked more like an elite corporate fortress than a home. The floors were dark gray marble, the walls were minimalist concrete and glass, and the panoramic windows displayed the glittering expanse of the city like a captive kingdom.

Standing by the window, a glass of amber scotch in his hand, was Dante Vance.

He was remarkably tall, with broad shoulders and a lean, disciplined build wrapped in a perfectly tailored charcoal suit. His hair was pitch-black, cropped close to a face defined by sharp, striking angles and a jawline that looked as though it had been chiseled out of granite. But it was his eyes that caught her—they were a piercing, volcanic hazel, incredibly intelligent and totally unreadable. A faint, silver scar traced the edge of his left collarbone, visible beneath his unbuttoned collar.

He didn't turn around immediately when she entered. He simply listened to the sound of her heels against the marble.

"You don't walk like a victim, Bianca," he said, his voice a deep, resonant baritone that carried a quiet command.

"I’m not a victim, Mr. Vance," Bianca said, standing her ground in the center of the room, her small suitcase resting by her side. "I’m a businesswoman who just completed a highly unfavorable trade execution."

Dante turned around, his hazel eyes narrowing slightly as he appraised her. He looked at her dark hair, her sharp grey eyes, and the defiant set of her jaw. There was no pity in his gaze, nor was there the cheap, vulgar lust she had come to expect from the men in her family’s circle. He looked at her the way an assassin looks at a map—identifying the terrain, searching for the core.

"Your father thinks he outsmarted me," Dante said, walking slowly toward her, his footsteps entirely silent. "He thinks he gave me a defective product in exchange for fifty percent of my maritime infrastructure. He thinks because you can't carry a child, you have no long-term value."

"And what do you think?"

Dante stopped exactly three feet from her, his presence massive, casting a long shadow over her. "I think a woman who can save a dying logistics empire while her uncles are stealing from the tills is worth ten traditional bloodline brides. I don't need a nursery, Bianca. I need a sovereign co-ruler for the New York harbor. I bought your mind. The rest of you is just an administrative detail."

"Then we understand each other," Bianca said, her voice matching his icy composure. "I will manage your logistical integration. I will organize the Hudson Valley terminals. In exchange, I expect complete autonomy over my corporate divisions and zero interference from my family."

"Agreed," Dante said. He set his glass down on a marble console. "But there is one formality we must observe. Your family—and my enemies—are watching this house. They expect a marriage. They expect a consummation. If we do not behave like a man and wife for the next three days, the treaty will be questioned, and a questioned treaty invites bullets."

He stepped closer, his hand reaching out. His long, calloused fingers caught her chin, lifting her face to his. His touch was warm, surprisingly gentle, but his grip was absolute.

"Three days, Bianca," he whispered, his breath warm against her lips. "We stay in this suite. We show the world we are united. After that, you get your empire."

Bianca looked into his volcanic eyes and felt a sudden, terrifying shift in the air. For the first time in her life, she was dealing with a man she couldn't predict. "Three days," she agreed.
