Chapter 1 - The Transaction of Flesh and Shadow

"Watch your mouth, Bianca," Lucille Romano said, her voice dropping like a velvet guillotine. She took a delicate sip of her mineral water, her diamonds catching the flickering amber glare of the fireplace. "You speak as if you have choices left to make. The Caruso alliance is dead. The family name has been dragged through every parlor from Manhattan to Newport because of your medical... deficiency. We are offering you a way to be useful."
Bianca stood perfectly still in the center of her father’s opulent, book-lined study. The scent of expensive pipe tobacco and old leather, which had once spelled safety to her as a child, now felt suffocating. She looked at her father, Victor. He remained seated behind his massive mahogany desk, his hands resting heavily on his silver-headed cane. He still refused to meet her eyes.
"Who is the proposal from, Dad?" Bianca asked, keeping her voice completely level. She had spent a decade mastering the art of the poker face in high-stakes corporate negotiations; she would not break now, not in front of the people who had given her life only to treat her like a depreciated asset.
Victor cleared his throat, a rough, grating sound. "Dante Vance."
A chill traveled straight down Bianca’s spine. The name echoed through the New York underworld like a death rattle. Dante Vance. The Iron Sovereign. He was thirty-five years old, the absolute ruler of the Vance syndicate, controlling the docks, the real estate, and the dark undercurrents of the five boroughs. Rumor had it he was a man carved from cold flint—unforgiving, highly intelligent, and entirely detached from the old-world mafia traditions. He didn't care about honor or blood oaths; he cared about efficiency, leverage, and power.
He was also a man who had survived an assassination attempt three years ago that had left him with a legendary, lethal reputation and a complete disdain for the traditional Five Families.
"Dante Vance wants a Romano?" Bianca asked, her eyebrows rising in genuine disbelief. "Why? He has no interest in our territory, and he certainly doesn't need our money."
"He doesn't want our money," Victor said, finally looking up. His eyes were tired, sunken, and devoid of the fierce protective instinct Bianca had relied on her entire life. "He wants our logistics network. The Hudson Valley shipping lanes and the inland dry ports. He offered a full merger of our commercial interests. In exchange, he requested a wife from the Romano bloodline to seal the treaty."
"Then send Gianna," Bianca countered instantly, referring to her nineteen-year-old cousin who had spent her life preparing to be a traditional mafia trophy wife. "Or Sofia. They actually want the life. They want the penthouse, the black American Express cards, and the security detail."
"He didn't ask for them," Lucille cut in, stepping forward, her pearls clicking softly. "Dante Vance explicitly stated he had no use for a brainless child who spends her life on Instagram. He knows what you did for Romano Continental. He knows you hold the keys to the entire infrastructure. He wants a partner who can manage the integration of the networks."
Bianca let out a cold, sharp laugh. "A partner? Or a captive who knows how to read a balance sheet?"
"Does it matter?" Lucille replied coldly. "He knows about your diagnosis, Bianca. We did not hide it from him. The Caruso family threw you away because they wanted a breeding mare. Dante Vance laughed when he heard the news. He said an infertile woman is a blessing in his line of work—no vulnerabilities, no custody battles, no sentimental weaknesses to be used against him by his rivals. He is buying you precisely because you are broken."
The words felt like a physical blow to her chest, but Bianca merely tightened her jaw. She looked at the desk, where a thick leather-bound contract already lay open, a gold fountain pen resting beside it. Her father had already signed his name at the bottom of the final page.
"If I say no?" Bianca whispered.
Victor looked down at his hands. "Then the family cuts you off. You will be stripped of your position at Romano Continental. Your bank accounts, which are tied to the family trust, will be frozen. Your apartment in the city is owned by a Romano shell company; you will be evicted by Monday. In our world, Bianca, there is no room for a liability who refuses to pay her debts."
They weren't just selling her. They were completely erasing her. Twelve years of loyalty, sleepless nights, and legal shields, wiped out because her womb didn't fit their expansion strategy.
Bianca walked to the desk. She didn't cry. She didn't beg. She picked up the gold pen, her hand completely steady, and signed her name on the dotted line: Bianca Romano.

"When do I leave?" she asked.
"Tonight," Victor said softly. "His men are waiting downstairs."
