Chapter 9 - Justice and Rebuilding
By the time the police and estate security arrived at the boathouse, the culprit was tied up and the phone call recording had been secured as evidence.
The investigation was swift and unyielding. Federal authorities intercepted Victoria Brooks at the private airfield as she attempted to board a flight out of the state. Confronted with the mercenary’s confession and audio recordings proving her direct involvement in child endangerment, extortion, and corporate sabotage, Victoria was arrested in handcuffs on live television.
The corporate board immediately stripped Victoria of all stock options and voting rights, unanimously reaffirming Daniel Brooks as the sole, unchallenged leader of Brooks Global.
In the days following the storm, the narrative in the media flipped entirely. The fake scandal dissolved into widespread admiration for Grace’s bravery and devotion. She was no longer framed as an opportunist maid, but recognized as the brave hero who had saved the heiress and brought peace to a grieving family.
Yet, despite the public vindication, the atmosphere inside the Brooks mansion underwent the true transformation.
The heavy silence that had haunted the cream stone walls for nearly a year was gone forever. The dark curtains were pulled back, allowing bright morning sunlight to flood every corridor. The grand house felt like a home again.
One evening, after Lucy had been tucked safely into bed with her collection of wooden animals, Daniel invited Grace out to the glass balcony overlooking the manicured gardens. The night sky was clear, studded with thousands of brilliant stars.
"You saved us twice, Grace," Daniel said softly, stepping closer to her. "First from our grief, and then from the darkness that tried to tear us apart."
Grace looked out over the gardens, her heart beating fast. "I only did what love demanded, Daniel. I fell in love with Lucy the moment I saw her."
Daniel reached out, gently lifting her chin so her eyes met his.

Grace smiled, her eyes sparkling with happy tears. "He was there from the very beginning."
