Chapter 4 - A Crack in the Ice

Victoria stormed out of the estate in a fit of rage, but her exit did not mean the danger had passed. Her bitter defeat only hardened her resolve to regain control of the Brooks estate, no matter the cost.

With Victoria gone, a peaceful routine settled over the mansion for the first time since Amelia’s death. Under Grace’s nurturing presence, Lucy made incredible strides. The three-year-old was now running through the sunlit hallways, her golden curls bouncing as she chased Milo the bunny and a new wooden puppy Grace had brought her.

Daniel began coming home early from the office—something he had never done even before his wife passed away. For the first time in years, he found himself looking forward to walking through his front door. He began joining Lucy and Grace for dinner in the warm breakfast nook rather than eating cold meals alone in his massive dining hall.

One evening, as rain tapped softly against the high windows, Lucy sat on the plush living room carpet, drawing with colored pencils. Grace sat beside her, helping her shade a large green tree. Daniel stood near the fireplace, watching the scene with a profound sense of peace.

"Grace," Daniel spoke up, stepping closer. "I realized I never properly thanked you. Not just for helping Lucy eat, but for bringing life back into a house that felt like a tomb."

Grace looked up, a soft blush coloring her cheeks. "She is a wonderful little girl, Mr. Brooks. She just needed someone to hear her sadness without trying to fix it immediately. Children grieve in quiet ways."

"Call me Daniel, please," he said, taking a seat on the leather sofa near them. "We aren't master and servant here anymore."

As they talked, a quiet warmth bloomed between them—a subtle understanding born of shared care for a little girl. For the first time, Daniel spoke openly about Amelia, sharing memories of her laughter without feeling the overwhelming crushing weight of grief. Grace listened with deep empathy, sharing stories of her own simple, loving upbringing despite the hardships her family had faced.

However, distant eyes were still watching. Outside the iron gates, a hired photographer snapped long-lens photos through the illuminated windows. Victoria was building a new narrative for the tabloids: The Ruthless Billionaire and the Opportunist Nanny—Replacing a Lost Wife Before the Mourning Year Is Over.
