Chapter 5 - The Public Storm

The morning news broke like a thunderclap.

Daniel arrived at his downtown office to find a sea of reporters, cameras, and flashing lights blocking the glass entrance. Headlines spanned across major tabloids and social media feeds: "DALLAS MILLIONAIRE'S SECRET SCANDAL: HAS DANIEL BROOKS REPLACED HIS LATE WIFE WITH A POOR MAID?"

The articles were filled with venomous lies, suggesting that Grace had used psychological tactics to alienate Lucy from the rest of the Brooks family and that Daniel was neglecting his corporate duties to pursue an improper relationship with his household staff.

Inside the corporate boardroom, the stock dropped six points within hours. Board members, panicked by the public relations nightmare and egged on by Victoria behind the scenes, demanded an emergency hearing to evaluate Daniel's leadership and the stability of his household.

When Daniel returned home, his face was drawn with exhaustion and fury. Grace was waiting in the lobby, holding a tablet displaying the cruel comments and sensationalized headlines.

"Daniel, this is terrible," Grace said, her voice shaking with distress. "The press is tearing you apart, and they are painting a picture that will ruin your reputation and harm Lucy when she grows up. Maybe... maybe I should leave. If I disappear, the media will lose interest."

"No!"

The voice did not come from Daniel. It came from the top of the stairs.

Little Lucy stood at the landing, clutching her wooden bunny. Her big blue eyes were filled with absolute fear at the thought of Grace leaving. She ran down the stairs as fast as her tiny legs could carry her, throwing her arms around Grace’s waist.

"Don't go, Grace! Please don't go!" Lucy cried, burying her face in Grace’s apron.

Daniel knelt down beside them, wrapping his arms around both his daughter and Grace. The touch was instinctual, protective, and charged with an emotion he could no longer deny.

"You are not going anywhere, Grace," Daniel declared fiercely, looking into Grace's eyes. "We didn't do anything wrong. I won't let lies ruin the home we have built here. It is time I stopped letting others dictate my life."
