Chapter 8 - Confrontation in the Storm

Deep in the woods, near the dilapidated wooden boathouse, a lone light flickered.
Daniel and Grace approached quietly, staying low behind the dense tree line. Through the cracked window of the structure, they saw the mercenary contractor pacing back and forth, making an agitated phone call while Lucy sat shivering on a wooden crate, clutching her knees and crying softly.
"I have the kid!" the man shouted into his phone over the sound of thunder. "You said this would be a clean photo-op to make the nanny look bad, but the whole place is on lockdown! I need the rest of my payment now, Victoria, or I'm leaving her here!"
Daniel’s blood ran cold. The final betrayal was laid bare: his own sister had orchestrated his daughter's abduction just to destroy Grace and force a corporate takeover.
Overcome with a father's primal fury, Daniel didn't wait for his guards. He kicked the wooden door off its hinges with a deafening crash.
"Get away from my daughter!" Daniel roared.
The intruder spun around, pulling a heavy iron crowbar from his belt. He lunged at Daniel, and the two men crashed to the wooden floor in a violent struggle. The mercenary was larger, using his leverage to pin Daniel down and raising the iron bar to strike.
Seeing Daniel in mortal danger, Grace didn't hesitate. She grabbed a heavy brass lantern sitting on a nearby workbench and smashed it against the attacker's back with all her strength.
The man gasped, dropping the weapon as Daniel delivered a powerful right hook that knocked the intruder unconscious onto the floor.
Breathing heavily, Daniel scrambled up and rushed to Lucy. He pulled the trembling little girl into his arms, kissing her wet hair while Grace wrapped them both in a warm wool blanket from the corner shelf.

"Daddy! Grace!" Lucy sobbed, wrapping her arms tightly around both of their necks. "I kept Milo safe!"
She held up the small wooden bunny that Grace had slipped into her pocket earlier that day. Tears mingled with rain on Grace’s cheeks as she kissed the child's forehead. Daniel reached out, taking Grace’s hand in his, holding it with a firmness that promised he would never let go.
