Chapter 8 - The Gift of Time

That evening, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting pink and gold light across the rose garden, Matteo led Sophie out onto the stone patio.
He held a small wooden box wrapped in blue ribbon.
"What's that?" Sophie asked, jumping up and down slightly on the flagstones.
Matteo knelt before her, placing the box in her small hands. "Open it."
Sophie carefully pulled the ribbon and lifted the lid. Inside lay a brand-new stuffed bear—brown, soft, and beautifully made—with two matching shiny black button eyes. Beside it lay her old, worn bear with the mismatched blue thread.
Sophie looked at the new bear, then at her old one, her brow furrowing slightly in thought.
"I got you a new one," Matteo said gently, "in case the old one was too tired."
Sophie reached into the box, picked up her old bear, and hugged it tightly against her chest. Then she picked up the new bear and tucked it under her other arm.
"Now he has a brother," Sophie said, looking up at Matteo with a bright, radiant smile. "So he doesn't get lonely when I'm at school."
Matteo looked at his daughter, a sudden wave of warmth flooding his chest so intensely that his eyes stung. He pulled her into his arms, lifting her off her feet and hugging her close.

"You're a good girl, Sophie," he whispered into her dark curls. "The best thing that ever happened to me."
Elena walked out onto the patio, leaning against the stone archway, watching the two of them with tears of quiet happiness shining in her eyes. The fear that had defined her life for six years had finally dissolved, replaced by a profound, unbroken sense of peace.
