Chapter 10 - The Promise Kept

A year after the wedding, the summer sun was warm over the Hudson River.
On the top floor of Caruso Tower, the private balcony had been transformed into a lush garden filled with green plants, comfortable lounge chairs, and a small playhouse for Sophie.
Matteo stood at the glass railing, wearing a casual linen shirt, looking out over the Manhattan skyline. The city below was busy, fast, and relentless, but up here, it was completely quiet.
Elena walked out from the living room, stepping behind him and wrapping her arms around his waist, resting her cheek against his broad back.
"What are you thinking about?" she asked softly.
Matteo placed his hands over hers, turning slightly to pull her into his arms. "I was thinking about a winter evening six years ago, when a little girl in rubber boots walked into my lobby and told me I let her mommy go hungry."
Elena chuckled softly, kissing his jawline. "She was very brave."
"She saved my life," Matteo said quietly, looking toward the playhouse where eight-year-old Sophie was sitting with her two brown bears, drawing pictures in a notebook. "She gave me a reason to stop fighting wars and start living."
Sophie looked up from her drawing, catching her parents watching her. She waved her small hand with a bright, radiant laugh before going back to her artwork.

Matteo tightened his arms around Elena, resting his chin on her head as the golden light of the setting sun bathed the balcony in warmth.
The dark legacy of the Caruso name had been rewritten. The shadows of betrayal, fear, and loneliness were gone forever, replaced by an unbroken promise of love, family, and a future that belonged entirely to them.
