Chapter 7 - A Home Rebuilt

Three months passed.
The snow of deep winter melted into the crisp, bright light of early spring. The shadow that had hung over Caruso Tower for six years was completely gone, replaced by a fundamental shift in how the business operated.
Matteo systematically dismantled his uncle's illegal operations, shifting the family's core assets into legitimate commercial real estate, logistics, and art foundations. The violent disputes that had characterized the previous generation vanished, replaced by an era of stability and quiet strength.
The fifth-floor walk-up on 44th Street was a distant memory.
Elena and Sophie moved into the estate on Long Island, which had been completely renovated under Elena's direction. The dark wood paneling and cold marble were replaced by warm light, large windows, and gardens filled with blooming white roses.
In the grand parlor, a magnificent Steinway grand piano stood against the glass wall overlooking the lawn.
On a Tuesday afternoon, the sound of music drifted through the open doors of the parlor. Elena sat at the piano, her long fingers moving gracefully across the keys, playing a gentle, melodic jazz composition.
Sophie sat beside her on the wide bench, wearing a yellow sun dress, watching her mother's hands with wide, fascinated eyes.
Matteo stepped into the room silently, holding three cups of hot cocoa on a silver tray. He wore a simple navy sweater and trousers, looking relaxed for the first time in his life.
He set the tray on the coffee table and walked over to the piano, leaning against the polished wood frame, watching them.
"You're getting better at the bridge," Matteo said to Elena with a subtle smile.
Elena stopped playing, looking up at him with a soft, affectionate laugh. "I've had a lot of time to practice. The piano isn't taped together anymore."

Sophie reached out and tapped a single key, making a bright, clear note echo through the room. "Daddy, can I learn how to play?"
Matteo sat down on the other side of his daughter, wrapping his arm around her shoulders. "Your mother is the best teacher in the city, sweet heart. She'll teach you everything she knows."
