Chapter 1 - The Weight of Shadows

The silence inside the penthouse of Caruso Tower was thick, almost physical. Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, Manhattan stretched out in a glittering expanse of gold and frost, but inside, the only sound was the rhythmic, soft stitch of a needle passing through cloth.

Sophie sat on the floor, her small knees pulled up beneath a cashmere blanket Matteo had placed over her shoulders hours ago. She was entirely focused on her task, using blue thread to carefully secure a second button eye onto her worn brown bear. Her hands were small, her fingers red from the bitter cold she had endured on her long walk to the tower, but she did not complain. She was a child who had grown accustomed to quiet labor.

Matteo stood near the marble hearth, holding a glass of scotch he had not touched. His eyes shifted from the flames to the woman sitting on the edge of the velvet sofa across from him.

Elena looked frail. The light in the room caught the sharp angles of her collarbone and the shadow beneath her cheekbones. The blue cardigan she wore was frayed at the cuffs, and every few minutes, her eyes would dart toward the front door, half-expecting armed men to burst through the lock.

"He won't come here, Elena," Matteo said, his voice low and raspy, carrying the weight of a man who had not slept in days. "No one enters this floor without my personal clearance. You are safe."

Elena looked up, her gray eyes meeting his with a mix of exhaustion and faint bitterness. "Safe?" she whispered. "Matteo, I haven't been safe since the day I met you. I spent six years living in fear that every black car parked on my street belonged to your men coming to take my daughter away."

Matteo winced, the words striking harder than a physical blow. He walked over slowly, dropping to one knee before her—a posture he had never assumed for anyone in his thirty-eight years—and set his glass on the rug.

"I didn't know," he said, reaching out to touch her hand, though he stopped an inch short, waiting for her permission. "If I had known... if I had suspected for a single second that you were carrying my child, I would have burned this entire city to the ground to find you."

Elena stared down at his large, calloused hand. Tears welled in her eyes, catching the firelight. "That's the problem, Matteo. Your answer to everything is to burn the city down. I didn't want a war. I just wanted my daughter to have milk and a warm room."
