Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Courtroom

Though Beatriz was behind bars awaiting trial, the war was far from over.
Two weeks later, the preliminary hearing for bail and temporary custody took place at the High Court of Marbella. The media had caught wind of the scandal, and dozens of news vans and reporters thronged the steps of the courthouse, their cameras flashing violently as my black sedan pulled up to the curb.
I stepped out of the car, wearing a dark navy suit. I turned and carefully reached into the backseat, helping Isabella step out.
She wore a beautiful, modest light blue dress. Her hands were still wrapped in thin protective bandages, but the color had begun to return to her cheeks. She held my hand so tightly that her knuckles were white, looking terrified at the wall of screaming reporters and flashing camera bulbs.
"Focus on me, sweetheart," I whispered, leaning down. "Just look at my shoes and keep walking. I'm right here."
"Okay, Daddy," she squeaked, burying her face into my side as we pushed past the media circus into the grand, marble-columned sanctuary of the courthouse.
Inside Courtroom 3, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.
Beatriz sat at the defense table, wearing a gray prison jumpsuit. Despite her situation, her legal team was formidable—led by Antonio De La Cruz, one of the most ruthless, expensive criminal defense attorneys in southern Europe.
When the judge, Honorable Justice Mendoza, took the bench, De La Cruz immediately went on the offensive.
"Your Honor," De La Cruz began, his booming voice echoing off the high ceilings. "We request immediate bail for my client, Beatriz Vance, and an immediate dismissal of the digital video evidence submitted by the prosecution!"
"On what grounds, Mr. De La Cruz?" Justice Mendoza asked, eyeing the attorney over his half-moon spectacles.
"On the grounds of illegal surveillance and severe manipulation!" De La Cruz argued passionately. "Mr. Julian Vance illegally installed hidden audio and video recording devices throughout a private marital residence without my client's knowledge or consent. Under Spanish civil privacy laws, unconsented residential recordings are strictly inadmissible in court!"
A murmur ran through the gallery. Elena Rostova squeezed my arm gently at the prosecution table.
"Furthermore," De La Cruz continued, flashing a predatory smile, "we have sworn affidavits from eminent child psychologists asserting that Mr. Vance’s prolonged absences overseas created a severe emotional trauma in the child, leading to disruptive behavior that required firm domestic discipline. What my client did was not abuse—it was an attempt to instill structure in a wildly out-of-control, spoiled child!"
I felt a surge of volcanic rage boiling in my blood. How dare they sit in a court of law and blame an eight-year-old victim for her own torture?
I stood up from my seat before Elena could stop me.
"Your Honor," I said, my voice vibrating with controlled power.
"Mr. Vance, sit down, your council will speak for you," Justice Mendoza cautioned.
"With all due respect, Your Honor," I said, stepping out from behind the table, "I am the father of the child sitting in this room. And I ask the court for permission to submit a single item of evidence that does not rely on any digital security camera in my home."
Justice Mendoza looked at me intently, noting the absolute authority and raw sincerity in my posture. He gestured with his hand. "Proceed, Mr. Vance. But keep it brief."
I turned toward the gallery, looking directly at Isabella, who sat flanked by Marcus and a court-appointed child advocate.
"Isabella," I said softly. "Sweetheart, can you come up here for a moment?"
Isabella stood up slowly, her small shoes clicking softly against the hardwood floor. She walked up to the center aisle, stopping beside me.
I gently took her small, bandaged right hand and unwrapped the white cotton cloth, revealing the thick, angry red scars and healing skin across her tiny palm.
I turned her hand toward the judge’s bench.
"This is not digital footage, Your Honor," I declared, my voice echoing with terrifying clarity through the silent courtroom. "This is not an altered file. This is the hand of an eight-year-old child who spent three months dragging fifty-kilogram industrial trash bags across sharp stone patios because my wife told her she was useless. No privacy law in the world hides a child's wounds from the eyes of justice."
Justice Mendoza leaned forward, staring intently at Isabella's scarred hands. His face turned thunderous.
In the gallery, several jury consultants and observers gasped. Beatriz leaned back in her chair, her attorney frantically trying to whisper to her to maintain a neutral expression, but the damage was done.

Justice Mendoza slammed his gavel down with a deafening CRACK.
"Bail is DENIED," the judge ruled instantly, his voice dripping with absolute disgust. "The defendant, Beatriz Vance, will remain in high-security custody until trial. Furthermore, I am issuing a full restraining order and granting sole, unchallengeable legal and physical custody of Isabella Vance to her father, effective immediately!"
