Chapter 1 - Cold Calculated War

The marble floor of the foyer echoed with my daughter’s tiny, hesitant steps. Isabella didn’t walk like a child returning to the warmth of her own home; she walked like a trespasser trying not to leave footprints. Her tiny hands—caked in dried mud and raw with bloody, broken blisters—clutched my tailored jacket around her shoulders like a shield.
Behind us, Beatriz’s heels clicked sharply against the tile. The panicked edge in her voice had quickly metamorphosed into an aggressive, defensive bite.
"Julian, this is absurd," Beatriz spat, her white silk robe billowing behind her as she hurried to overtake me. "You walk in unannounced, catch a minor household misunderstanding out of context, and treat me like a criminal in front of the staff? Do you have any idea how much effort I’ve put into maintaining this estate while you were living lavishly in Dubai?"
I didn't answer her. In the cutthroat world of international real estate, I had learned that silence is the most terrifying weapon you can deploy against a liar. A liar needs your reactions to calibrate their next falsehood. Deprived of feedback, they begin to spiral, guessing at what you know and exposing their own vulnerabilities.
"Maria!" I called out, my voice cutting through the massive, cavernous entryway.
An older woman in a crisp black uniform emerged from the kitchen corridor, her face pale, her hands trembling. Maria had been my family’s head housekeeper for seven years. She looked at me, then at Isabella, and finally at Beatriz. The sheer terror in Maria’s eyes told me everything I needed to know. The abuse wasn't a secret in this house; it was a reign of terror that everyone had been coerced into keeping.
"Mr. Vance... you're back," Maria whispered, her voice barely audible.
"Maria, take Isabella upstairs to her room," I ordered softly, kneeling down to look my daughter in the eyes. "Prepare a warm bath for her. Get the medical kit from my private study—the heavy-duty burn cream and sterile bandages. Do not let anyone near her until I come up. Do you understand?"
"Yes, sir. Right away, sir," Maria said, stepping forward with tears glistening in her aged eyes.
"Isabella," I said, holding my daughter's quivering chin gently. "Go with Maria. Nobody in this house will ever hurt you again. I promise you that on my life."
Isabella looked at me, her dark brown eyes swimming with hesitation. "Daddy... are you going to leave again?"
"Never," I said. "Not until this is over."
As Maria led Isabella up the grand staircase, Beatriz stepped into my path, her arms crossed tight over her chest, her jaw set. The soft, elegant persona of the loving stepmother was completely stripped away, revealing the cold, calculating opportunist I had somehow been blind to for three years.
"You're making a massive mistake, Julian," Beatriz hissed, her eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. "You think you can come back here and judge my parenting? Isabella is spoiled, unruly, and manipulative. I was trying to instil some basic discipline into her! She lied to you about those bags—she dragged them out there herself to make a scene because she knew you were coming!"
"She didn't know I was coming," I said, my voice dropping to a low, dangerous register. "I didn't tell a single soul in Spain that my flight was landing today. Not my secretary, not my driver, and certainly not you."
Beatriz blinked, a subtle glitch in her composure.
"I stood behind the laurel hedge for ten minutes, Beatriz," I continued, stepping closer until I towered over her. "I heard you laughing on the phone. I heard you tell your friend that you had my daughter working like a maid. I heard you say she was terrified of you. And I saw the blisters on her eight-year-old hands."
For a split second, sheer panic flickered across Beatriz’s face. But she recovered with frightening speed. A sinister, arrogant smile crept up the side of her lips.
"So what?" she whispered, leaning in. "You have your word against mine, Julian. You think the family courts in Marbella are going to take the word of an absent father who spends nine months a year overseas over a devoted wife who sits on charity boards? I have documented reports from private child psychologists—doctors I hired—claiming Isabella has severe behavioral disorders and tendencies toward self-harm. Try to tear me down, Julian, and I will make sure the court deems you an unfit parent and hands me full custody of your daughter... along with half of Vance Development Corp."
My chest tightened, but I didn't flinch. She had planned this. This wasn't just cruel, impulsive abuse; it was a calculated, long-term trap designed to isolate my daughter and build a legal paper trail to leverage my fortune.
"You think you're the only one who knows how to build a case?" I asked quietly.
"I know I'm the one holding all the cards," Beatriz sneered, turning on her heel to walk toward the master suite. "Welcome home, darling. Let the game begin."

I watched her walk away, my knuckles turning white as I clenched my fists inside my pockets. I didn't chase her. I didn't scream. Instead, I pulled out my secure phone, dialed my personal assistant, and gave a single command:
"Get Marcus Cole on the line. Tell him I need the entire legal and private security apparatus assembled at my estate within two hours. We are at war."
