Chapter 4 - A Spark in the Darkness

Unaware of the web tightening around them, Clementine was thriving for the first time in her life. The four-year-old’s innocence proved to be an irresistible force against the dark, brooding atmosphere of the mansion.
In the grand garden, Clementine was chasing a butterfly, her laughter ringing across the stone courtyard where, just two days prior, her mother had been humiliated. Adriano stood on the balcony, watching her with a rare, faint smile softening his harsh features.
Rebecca stepped out onto the balcony, dressed in a simple, elegant blue dress that highlighted her soft features. She looked at Adriano, still struggling to reconcile the feared mafia boss with the man who looked at her daughter with such unspoken warmth.
"She hasn't laughed like that since her father died," Rebecca said softly.
Adriano turned to her. "She deserves to laugh every day. And so do you, Rebecca."
"I don't know how to thank you, Mr. Falcone... Adriano," she corrected herself timidly. "For everything. But we can't stay here forever. Your wife hates us, your associates look at us like threats, and... your world is too dangerous."
"You are safer here than anywhere else on earth, Rebecca," Adriano said, taking a step closer to her. "I failed Thomas once. I couldn't save him. I will tear this city apart before I let anyone bring harm to you or Clementine again."
Their eyes met, a quiet, powerful chemistry igniting between them—born from shared grief, protection, and an undeniable attraction that had been quietly building beneath the surface.
Before Rebecca could speak, a sharp knock interrupted them. Adriano’s head of security, a scarred veteran named Luca, stepped out onto the balcony, his face dark.
"Boss," Luca whispered. "We intercepted an encrypted transmission from Marcus’s private server. It traces back to the night Thomas Hail was killed."

Adriano’s face hardened instantly. "What does it say?"
"It wasn't an accident, boss," Luca said grimly. "Marcus ordered the hit. And Genevieve signed off on the payment using your secondary account."
