Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Deceased

The revelation hung in the air like a heavy mist. Rebecca felt her breath catch in her throat, her knees suddenly giving out. Adriano caught her swiftly, lifting her into his arms while making sure Clementine remained safe in her grasp. He carried them through the grand double doors of the mansion, ignoring the servants who stood frozen in shock as their master carried the head housekeeper to the grand guest suites on the top floor—a place strictly off-limits to staff.

After setting them down in a warm, fire-lit room and ensuring a doctor and trusted female caretaker attended to Clementine, Adriano sat across from Rebecca with two hot cups of tea.

"Thomas... knew you?" Rebecca’s voice shook as she wrapped a thick fleece blanket around herself. "He was just a local electrician. He never mentioned a Falcone."

"He didn't know who I really was," Adriano said, staring into the flickering fireplace. "Three years ago, a rival syndicate ambushed my car on an isolated mountain road outside your hometown. I was shot, bleeding out in a ditch. Everyone else would have driven past. But Thomas stopped."

Adriano traced the long, jagged scar on his jawline. "He dragged me into his truck. He used his own shirt to stem the bleeding and drove me to a hidden clinic hours away. He saved my life, Rebecca. When I asked him how I could repay him, he just smiled that shy smile of his and said, 'Just pass it forward, man. I've got a beautiful wife and a baby girl waiting for me at home. That's all the wealth I need.'"

Rebecca buried her face in her hands, sob tearing from her chest as memories of Thomas flooded her mind.

"Two weeks after that night," Adriano continued, his voice dropping into a dangerous, dark octave, "Thomas died in that 'roadside accident.' I tried to find you, but by the time my men reached your town, you had vanished. Someone wiped your records. I spent three full years searching the country for Thomas Hail’s widow and child, never imagining you had been directed to my own estate by an agency."

Rebecca raised her head, eyes wide. "The placement agency... they said a private recruiter selected me specifically for Rhode Island."

"Because it was a trap," Adriano said, standing up, his tall frame blocking the firelight. "Someone in my organization knew I was searching for you. They brought you here, placed you under Genevieve's cruel thumb, and kept your name off my official payroll ledgers to keep you invisible to me."

May you like

"Who would do that?" Rebecca whispered, terror creeping into her veins.

"Someone who wants to use you as leverage against me," Adriano answered grimly. "And someone who knows the truth about how Thomas really died."
