Chapter 3 - The Nest of Vipers

Morning broke over the Falcone estate not with the sound of songbirds, but with a suffocating tension.
By order of Adriano, Rebecca was no longer a maid. She and Clementine were moved into the master wing, provided with fine clothes, and assigned personal security. This sudden rise in status sent shockwaves through the local high society and the underworld network that monitored the Falcone empire.
Genevieve was furious. Locked in her private suite, she threw crystal vases against the wall, her phone glued to her ear.
"He knows something!" Genevieve whispered fiercely into the receiver. "He put the girl and that bastard child in the main wing! If he finds out what happened three years ago in West Virginia, both of us are dead, Marcus!"
On the other end of the line was Marcus Vane, Adriano’s second-in-command and long-time business partner. Marcus was a smooth-talking strategist who managed the syndicate’s offshore logistics—and the man who secretly lusted after Adriano’s throne.
"Calm down, Genevieve," Marcus replied, his voice silky and cold. "Adriano is emotional right now. The child triggered his stupid guilt. He doesn't have proof. All he knows is that Thomas Hail was killed."
"He's looking into the old files!" Genevieve spat. "You told me three years ago that the hit on Thomas Hail was clean! You said making it look like a drunk driving accident would cover our tracks after Thomas saw Marcus’s men moving the illegal weapon crates that night!"
"And it was clean," Marcus snapped. "The only mistake was letting his wife slip away back then. But now she’s right where we want her. Adriano’s soft spot for that woman and her child is his ultimate weakness. We use them to force Adriano to step down, or we eliminate all three of them in one night."

Genevieve’s eyes narrowed in the mirror. "What about the girl?"
"If Rebecca Hail dies, the secret of what Thomas saw dies forever," Marcus said coldly. "Keep your head down, Genevieve. The storm is coming, but when the dust settles, you and I will run New England."
