Chapter 7 - Purging the Ghosts

Two weeks passed. The legal tide moved with terrifying speed against the Sterling family. With the overwhelming mountain of physical evidence—hidden rooms, forged medical records, off-shore bribe ledgers, and forensic testimony—the court denied every bail motion.

However, Clara knew that true healing required confronting the physical space where her freedom had been stolen.

On a quiet Tuesday afternoon, Julian drove Clara back to the Vance Estate. The main gates were surrounded by private security guards, keeping away the persistent crowd of reporters stationed outside.

The estate felt entirely different now. The corrupt staff had been replaced by trusted personnel, and every dark corner of the house was bathed in sunlight, with windows opened wide to let the crisp afternoon breeze blow through.

"Are you sure you want to be here?" Julian asked gently as they stepped into the grand foyer—the exact spot where the tea tray had crashed two weeks ago.

"I need to do this," Clara replied steadily.

Together, they walked up the grand spiral staircase and entered the long-abandoned East Wing. Workers were already busy tearing down the interior walls, removing the reinforced heavy doors, and dismantling the hidden passages.

Clara walked into the room where she had been kept during her darkest hours. The small window at the top of the wall was now completely opened, letting in rays of golden light.

"What are you going to do with this place?" Clara asked softly.

"I'm tearing the entire East Wing down to its foundation," Julian declared firmly. "We are going to build a glass conservatory and an art center here. A place dedicated to funding foundations for survivors of human trafficking and domestic abuse. This wing will never be a prison again."

Clara turned to Julian, her eyes shining with admiration and love. "I want to run the foundation myself, Julian. I want to use my story to make sure no one ever feels as invisible as I did."

Julian smiled, taking her into his arms. "It’s yours. Everything I have is yours."

Just then, Marcus stepped into the corridor, holding a legal document. "Julian, Mrs. Vance... the district attorney just called. Victoria Sterling’s trial has been fast-tracked. She’s requesting a plea deal, but her lawyer made one condition."

Julian’s eyes narrowed. "What condition?"

"She wants to speak to Clara face-to-face one last time before sentencing."
