Chapter 2 - Shadows of the East Wing

Julian drove the car himself, refusing to let any chauffeur handle the wheel. Clara sat in the passenger seat, wrapped in Julian’s heavy cashmere overcoat. She clutched the lapels tightly around her neck, staring out the window at the passing city lights as if seeing the world for the first time in an eternity.
He took her not to a hotel, and not back to the estate, but to a high-security penthouse he had purchased two years into her disappearance—a place he had built as a sanctuary, holding out a desperate, fading hope that he would one day bring her home.
The penthouse was warm, quiet, and isolated from the noise of the metropolis below. Julian gently guided Clara inside, leading her straight to the master bathroom. He filled the massive marble tub with warm water, adding soothing oils, his movements delicate, almost reverent.
"Can you stand, my love?" he asked softly, sitting on the edge of the tub.
Clara nodded slowly. As she began to unbutton the coarse, faded servant's dress, Julian’s eyes filled with fresh tears, though he forced himself to stay strong for her. Across her back and shoulders were faint, pale scars—remnants of physical cruelty and hard labor.
"Tell me what she did to you," Julian whispered, taking a soft washcloth and gently bathing her back as she sank into the warm water. "Every single detail."
Clara closed her eyes, letting the heat soak into her exhausted muscles. "The night of the storm... four years ago," she began, her voice gaining strength slowly. "I was driving home from the charity gala. A car rammed into mine near the estate grounds. I thought it was an accident..."
She took a shaky breath. "When I woke up, I was in the basement of the old east wing. The section of the estate that was closed off for renovations. Victoria was there. She had paid off the paramedic team to report my body burned beyond recognition in a vehicle fire. You were told I was dead, weren't you?"
"No," Julian said, his jaw tightening. "They found a burned car and dental records that matched yours—records Victoria’s family doctor forged. But I never believed it. I never stopped looking."
"She kept me in the dark for two years," Clara continued, her eyes glistening. "Feeding me just enough to keep me alive. Then, two years ago, she moved into the estate full-time, claiming to 'help you grieve.' She brought me out of the basement, stripped me of my identity, gave me the name 'Elena,' and made me clean the estate while you were away at work. If I made a sound, or tried to approach you, she swore she would frame you for a corporate crime that would put you in prison for life."
Julian closed his eyes, the absolute horror of the psychological trap washing over him. Victoria had exploited Clara's love for him, using Julian's safety as the ultimate leash to keep Clara silent in plain sight.
Suddenly, Julian’s phone buzzed aggressively on the counter. It was his chief legal counsel, Arthur Pendelton.
Julian picked it up, stepping slightly aside while keeping his eyes on Clara. "Speak."
"Julian, we have a massive problem," Arthur’s voice sounded frantic. "Victoria Sterling has just filed an emergency injunction with the High Court. She’s claiming you assaulted her at the estate, kidnapped a domestic worker, and are mentally unfit to retain control of Vance Enterprises. The board is calling an emergency meeting for 8:00 AM tomorrow."

Julian looked at Clara, who was watching him with wide, fearful eyes.
"Let them call the board," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Prepare the forensic team. We are going to dig up every floorboard in the east wing tonight."
