Chapter 3 - The War Room

By 3:00 AM, the penthouse had transformed into a command center. Julian had summoned his most trusted allies: his private investigator, Marcus; his legal chief, Arthur; and Dr. Evelyn Reed, a trauma specialist and close family friend who was currently examining Clara in the guest suite.
Dr. Reed stepped out into the living room, pulling off her glasses with a heavy sigh. "Physically, she is severely malnourished and suffering from long-term vitamin deficiencies, but her vital signs are stable. Psychologically... she has endured severe psychological coercion. But Julian, her memory is sharp. She remembers dates, names, and conversations."
"Did she give you details about the staff?" Marcus asked, opening his laptop.
"Yes," Dr. Reed replied. "Victoria wasn't acting alone. The head housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, and two of the night guards were paid off with off-shore accounts managed by the Sterling family. They were the handlers keeping Clara isolated whenever Julian returned home early."
Julian stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the sleeping city. His mind was racing, connecting four years of subtle anomalies—unaccounted maintenance expenses in the east wing, sudden resignations of old household staff, and Victoria’s suspicious ability to always know his exact daily schedule.
"Marcus," Julian commanded without turning around. "Did you secure the east wing?"
"My team raided the property an hour ago under the authority of your sole property title," Marcus said, pulling up live video feeds on his screen. "We found the hidden room behind the wine cellar in the east wing. Beds, restraints, and medical supplies—including heavy sedatives stamped with Victoria Sterling’s private physician’s seal."
Arthur leaned forward, tapping his pen against the table. "This is enough to put Victoria away for human trafficking, false imprisonment, and conspiracy. But commercially, she has set a trap. The Sterling Group holds 35% of Vance Enterprises' voting shares. If she gets arrested tonight, her father will dump those shares onto the open market, crashing your stock and triggering a hostile takeover by midnight tomorrow."
Julian turned around, a dangerous, cold smile spreading across his face.
"She thinks she can hide behind her money," Julian said quietly. "She thinks that because her family controls the financial pipelines, I will hesitate to ruin her."
He walked over to the table and tapped a file containing Victoria's personal assets. "She spent four years turning my home into a prison. I am going to turn her entire family empire into dust."

Just then, the door to the guest room opened. Clara stepped out, wearing a soft, oversized sweater. She looked frail, but her stance was remarkably steady.
"Don't just fight her in court, Julian," Clara said, her voice clear and resonant for the first time. The terror that had clouded her gaze was gone, replaced by an burning resolve. "Fight her where she feels most invincible. Tomorrow's board meeting... I'm coming with you."
