Chapter 7 - The Shadows Strike

Winter turned into early spring, and the bond between Ethan, Clara, and Lily grew unbreakable.

Preparations were underway for a quiet, intimate autumn wedding on the estate grounds. Ethan had formally adopted Lily, and the little girl proudly wore a small gold locket with Ethan and Clara’s photos inside.

However, hatred dies hard.

Madison Vale, living in disgrace in a small apartment in Boston after her father’s empire crumbled, was consumed by a toxic, obsessive fury. She watched social media posts depicting Clara’s charity galas and Ethan’s loving public appearances with an envy that curdled into madness.

On a foggy Tuesday afternoon, while Ethan was away in Washington D.C. attending a cybersecurity summit, Clara took Lily to a newly opened children’s library in Hartford—a project funded by the Whitmore Foundation.

As Clara stepped out of the library toward her car, holding Lily’s hand, a dark sedan pulled up sharply to the curb.

Before the security guard assigned to Clara could react, two men in black masks stepped out, sprayed the guard with a tear-gas canister, snatched five-year-old Lily from Clara’s grip, and threw her into the back seat.

“LILY!” Clara screamed, her voice shattering the quiet street.

She threw herself onto the hood of the moving car, clutching the windshield wiper with all her strength. “Give me back my daughter!”

The car swerved violently. Clara was thrown onto the asphalt, scraping her hands and knees painfully, but she forced herself up, sprinting toward the departing vehicle, screaming the license plate number into her phone as she dialed Ethan’s private line.

In Washington D.C., Ethan was standing at a podium addressing three hundred government officials when his emergency phone buzzed in his pocket.

He stopped mid-sentence. He pulled out the phone.

“Clara?”

“Ethan! They took her!” Clara’s frantic, weeping voice filled his ear. “A black sedan—Madison’s men—they snatched Lily outside the Hartford library!”

In an instant, the calm, corporate suit vanished. The lion woke.

Ethan threw his speech notes onto the floor, turned to his chief of security, and barked a single command: “Prep the private jet. We are hunting.”
