Chapter 6 - A Different Kind of Home

Three weeks passed.
The storm surrounding the Vale scandal blew over as Ethan’s legal team systematically dismantled Richard Vale’s corporate influence. Stock prices rebounded to record highs as the public learned of the Whitmore Family Foundation’s massive new literacy expansion, spearheaded by its new director: Clara Bennett.
In her new role, Clara flourished. She was no longer the quiet woman hiding in expensive rooms. Dressed in elegant, simple blazers, her confidence restored, she directed millions of dollars toward building modern libraries and funding after-school programs across New England.
Yet despite her new status, the sweetest changes happened inside the mansion.
The cold, silent estate had come alive.
Laughter echoed through the marble corridors. Lily’s toys were scattered across the library floor, and Ethan—the man who used to work until midnight—now made it a strict rule to be home by 6:00 PM every evening for dinner.
One Saturday evening, a heavy snowfall wrapped the Greenwich estate in quiet white.
In the grand living room, a roaring fire crackled in the stone fireplace. Ethan sat on the floor near the hearth, wearing a soft wool sweater, patiently helping Lily construct a massive LEGO castle.
Clara walked in carrying two mugs of hot chocolate topped with marshmallows. She stopped at the doorway, watching them, her heart overflowing with a quiet, profound happiness she had never thought she would feel again.
Ethan looked up, catching her eye. A soft, breathtaking smile broke across his face—a smile reserved only for her.
“Is that hot chocolate I smell?” Ethan asked, standing up and taking the mugs from her hands.
“Only if you’ve finished building the dragon tower,” Clara teased softly.
“The dragon tower is complete!” Lily announced proudly, jumping up and holding a lopsided red structure high in the air. “Mr. Ethan made the drawbridge work!”
“He’s good at fixing things,” Clara murmured, her hazel eyes meeting Ethan’s intense gray gaze.
Ethan set the mugs on the side table, stepped closer to Clara, and gently reached out, his thumb brushing against her cheek. The touch sent a delicious shiver down her spine.
“I didn't fix this house, Clara,” Ethan said softly, his voice thick with emotion. “You and Lily did. Before you came, this was just a cold box full of expensive furniture. Now... it’s a home.”
Clara looked into his eyes, seeing no trace of the cold, distant billionaire she had once feared. She saw a man who was fierce, protective, gentle, and utterly devoted.
“Ethan...” she whispered.
Before she could speak, Ethan reached out, taking her hand in his, bringing her knuckles to his lips for a soft, lingering kiss.
“Stay with me, Clara,” Ethan murmured against her skin. “Not just as the director of the foundation. Stay with me as my equal. As my partner. As the woman I love.”
Clara’s breath hitched. Tears of joy filled her eyes as she stepped into his embrace, wrapping her arms around his neck.
“I love you, Ethan,” she whispered into his chest, smelling the warm sandalwood of his skin. “I’ve loved you since the moment you picked up my daughter’s blanket.”
From the floor near the fire, Lily clapped her small hands together. “Yay! Does this mean Mr. Ethan gets to live with us forever?”
May you like
Ethan laughed—a rich, happy sound—and reached down, scooping Lily up into his other arm, holding both mother and daughter close to his heart.
“Forever, little princess,” Ethan promised. “Forever.”
