Chapter 2 - The Mask Shatters

Ethan slowly stood up from the floor, his hands stained with Clara’s blood. The cold, analytical genius that had built a multi-billion-dollar empire suddenly turned its full, terrifying weight onto the woman he was supposed to marry.

“Is this true, Madison?” Ethan asked, his voice dropping into a register so quiet, so deadly, that even the storm outside seemed to hesitate.

“Ethan, you’re going to take the word of a confused five-year-old over mine?” Madison laughed, a forced, sharp sound that rattled like loose change. “She’s making things up! These people are opportunists. I caught Clara stealing silver from the dining sideboard last week and I was trying to be generous by not firing her on the spot—”

“I didn't steal anything!” Clara gasped out, her eyes fluttering open, disoriented and pale. “Mr. Whitmore... the silver is in the inventory box... in the pantry...”

Ethan looked down at Clara, then at Lily, who was trembling violently. He reached into his pocket, pulled out his personal phone, and tapped a speed-dial button.

“Arthur,” Ethan said into the receiver, his voice flat. “Lock the estate gates. Call Dr. Harrison and tell him to bring a trauma kit to the main house immediately. Then bring up the high-definition security feeds from the second-floor hallway for the last thirty minutes.”

Madison’s face drained of every drop of color. “Security feeds? Ethan, you told me the internal hallways didn't have cameras!”

“The public hallways don't,” Ethan replied coldly, stepping closer to her until his looming height cast a dark shadow over her silk dress. “The security system I built for my own home monitors every entryway, Madison. Including the nursery lounge.”

Within three minutes, Arthur—the veteran head of estate security—entered the room carrying a sleek black tablet. Without a word, he handed it to Ethan and stepped back.

Ethan tapped the screen.

The video played in high-definition clarity. It showed Madison entering the suite ten minutes prior. It showed her shouting at Clara, snatching a pile of laundry from her hands, and throwing it onto the floor. It showed Clara kneeling to pick it up, only for Madison to pull her back by her hair and shove her with full force toward the mirrored console.

And most damning of all, the audio captured Madison’s clear, sharp voice as Clara lay bleeding: “Stay down, you pathetic little leech. If you say a word to Ethan, I’ll make sure social services takes your daughter away by morning.”

The investors standing in the doorway gasped in absolute disgust.

Ethan watched the video twice. His jaw clenched so tight a muscle ticked in his cheek. When he looked up from the tablet, his eyes were no longer gray; they were the color of burning ash.

“Arthur,” Ethan said quietly.

“Yes, Mr. Whitmore?”

“Escort Miss Vale to her room. Give her fifteen minutes to pack one bag. Then throw her off my property.”

“Ethan, no!” Madison shrieked, dropping her aristocratic poise as Arthur’s heavy hand clamped onto her wrist. “You can’t do this to me! My father is on your board of directors! This will ruin the merger! You need my family!”

Ethan stepped directly into her face, his voice a low thunder. “Tell your father that if he ever sets foot on Whitmore property again, I will release this video, along with the forensic audit of his offshore shell accounts that my security team completed last Tuesday. Now get out of my house.”
