Chapter 8 - Family Ties

Months turned into a year. The diner became a roaring success, known throughout New York not just for its food, but for its welcoming atmosphere.
Sophia’s mother had made a remarkable recovery thanks to the top-tier medical care Adrian had arranged, and she was now living in a beautiful apartment near the diner, often visiting to watch Emma play.
One evening, after the diner had closed its doors for the night, Adrian, Sophia, and Emma were sitting together in the back booth. Outside, a gentle snow was falling, echoing the night they had first met, but inside, the diner was filled with golden light and warmth.
Emma was fast asleep, resting her head on a plush cushion, her hand still holding a small wooden toy car Adrian had carved for her.
Sophia sat across from Adrian, sipping tea. "She loves you, you know," Sophia said softly, looking at her daughter. "She asks if you're coming over for dinner every single day."
Adrian looked at Emma, a look of profound tenderness in his eyes. "I never thought I’d have a family, Sophia. In my old life, having people you care about was considered a weakness—a target for your enemies."
"And now?" Sophia asked gently, reaching across the table to lay her hand over his.
Adrian turned his hand over, entwining his fingers with hers. Her skin was warm, soft, and real.
"Now I realize it’s the only thing worth fighting for," Adrian said, meeting her eyes. "Sophia, when I walked into this diner a year ago, I was a dead man walking. I had money, power, and fear, but I had nothing real. You and Emma gave me a life."
Sophia felt a tear slip down her cheek, but a radiant smile broke across her face. "You gave us a future, Adrian. You saved us when you didn't have to."

"I want to be here for every future," Adrian said, his voice thick with emotion. "For every school play, every scraped knee, every Thanksgiving... if you'll have me."
Sophia squeezed his hand tight. "We’ve been waiting for you to ask."
