Chapter 7 - Shadows of the Past

While the diner flourished, becoming a beloved staple of the neighborhood, transition was never entirely seamless.
One rainy Tuesday afternoon, a high-ranking official from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Agent Marcus Vance, walked into the diner. He sat down at Adrian’s usual booth, ordering a cup of coffee from Sophia with a polite nod.
Adrian, who was sitting at the counter helping Emma with her second-grade math homework, noticed the agent immediately. He stood up, patted Emma on the head, and walked over to Vance's table.
"Agent Vance," Adrian said, sitting down across from him. "I thought our business was concluded when I handed over Salvatore's offshore ledger."
Vance took a sip of his coffee, nodding in appreciation. "Good coffee, Moretti. And yes, Salvatore is going away for the rest of his natural life. You did the city a great service."
"Then why are you here?"
Vance set his cup down, leaning forward. "Because a man doesn't just walk away from a hundred-million-dollar syndicate without leaving a vacuum. Some of your old captains in Chicago and Philadelphia aren't happy that you converted the Moretti assets into legitimate trusts. They think you've gone soft."
Adrian’s expression remained stone cold. "Let them think what they want. If they step foot in New York, they answer to the law. I gave your team enough evidence to dismantle their networks if they cross the line."
"You really turned over a new leaf, didn't you?" Vance murmured, looking past Adrian toward Sophia, who was laughing with Emma behind the counter. "I didn't believe the reports. The great Adrian Moretti, neutralized by a waitress and a little girl."
"They didn't neutralize me, Vance," Adrian said, his voice quiet yet carrying an undeniable strength. "They saved me."
Vance stared at him for a long moment before sliding a manila folder across the table. "This is a list of the last three loyalists trying to stir up trouble in Brooklyn. We picked them up an hour ago. Your clean break is officially complete, Adrian. You're a free man."
Adrian looked down at the file, feeling an immense weight lift from his shoulders—a weight he had carried since he was a teenager on the streets.

"Thank you, Marcus," Adrian said.
