Chapter 5 - The War at the Gates

The victory at the docks did not come without consequences.
Salvatore, realizing that his informant had been captured and his empire was being dismantled from the inside, grew desperate. A cornered predator is the most dangerous kind.
Late that night, as a thick snow began to fall over Adrian's estate, the silence was shattered by the sound of tires screeching through the main gates.
Inside the mansion, Sophia was sitting by the fireplace in the living room, reading a bedtime story to Emma. Suddenly, the alarm system wailed, red emergency lights flashing across the ceiling.
Sophia bolted upright, pulling Emma into her arms.
"Sophia! Get to the safe room!" Frankie yelled, running down the corridor with two armed guards.
"Where is Adrian?" she cried out over the deafening sirens.
"He's at the front gate holding them off! Go!"
Instead of running to the basement safe room, Sophia saw through the grand floor-to-ceiling windows that Salvatore's men had breached the perimeter. Gunfire echoed through the snowy courtyard. Outside, Adrian was behind a stone pillar, firing back with lethal precision, protecting the house where Sophia and Emma were sheltering.
Sophia’s heart hammered against her ribs. For months, she had viewed Adrian as a dangerous man from a world she wanted no part of. But as she watched him risk his life outside, she realized he wasn't fighting for his money or his turf. He was fighting to keep them safe.
Suddenly, a side window shattered. A heavyset man with a tactical vest stepped into the hallway, holding a shotgun. His eyes locked onto Sophia and Emma.
"Well, well," the man sneered, raising his weapon. "Salvatore's prize."
Emma screamed, burying her face in her mother's chest.
Sophia didn't hesitate. Grabbing a heavy iron poker from the fireplace, she swung it with every ounce of motherly rage she possessed, striking the intruder across the wrist. The shotgun clattered to the marble floor.
Before the man could recover, Adrian burst through the doorway, his coat torn, eyes burning with fury. He tackled the intruder to the floor, rendering him motionless with a single, brutal blow.
Adrian stood up, breathing heavily, his hands trembling slightly. He rushed over to Sophia and Emma, checking them over with frantic eyes.
"Are you hurt? Did he touch you?" Adrian asked, his voice raw with pure panic—a tone no one had ever heard from Adrian Moretti.
"We're okay," Sophia breathed, tears finally spilling over her cheeks. She looked at Adrian, seeing the bleeding cut on his temple. "You're bleeding."
"It's nothing," Adrian said.
Emma reached out her small hand, touching Adrian's cheek gently. "Don't be hurt, Mr. Adrian."
May you like
Adrian froze. He lowered himself to his knees, taking Emma's small hand in his own large, calloused grip. The ruthless mob boss looked up at Sophia, his eyes filled with an unbearable vulnerability.
"It's over," Adrian whispered. "Salvatore’s main force was wiped out at the gate. The police are sweeping his headquarters right now. It’s over."
