Chapter 4 - Blood and Iron

Rain lashed against the rusted steel shipping containers at the South Brooklyn pier. Fog hung low over the dark ocean water, muffling the sound of the waves crashing against the wooden pylons.

Lucas Reed stood under the awning of an administrative office, checking his watch impatiently. Three men in heavy coats stood near him, automatic weapons concealed under their jackets.

"Where is the transport?" Lucas snapped at one of the men. "Salvatore promised a boat would be here by midnight to take me to Miami."

"Calm down, Lucas," one of Salvatore's men replied. "The fog delayed the vessel. Another twenty minutes."

Suddenly, the lights across the entire dock complex went pitch black. The loud hum of the industrial generators cut out, leaving only the sound of the pouring rain and the howling wind.

"What the hell?" Lucas gasped, pulling a pistol from his holster. "Get the flashlights!"

Before the men could react, a shadow detached itself from the dark container behind them. A silent, swift strike disarmed the first guard, knocking him unconscious against the steel wall.

Guns barked into the darkness, flash-blinds illuminating the pouring rain, but Adrian moved like a ghost born of the docks he had controlled for fifteen years. Within two minutes, Salvatore's men were on the ground, disarmed and neutralized.

Lucas backed away slowly, his gun shaking in his hands, pointing wildly into the blackness. "Adrian! I know you're out there! You think you're untouchable? Salvatore is going to take everything from you! The docks, the city, that diner girl and her kid!"

A hand of steel grabbed Lucas’s wrist from behind, twisting it violently until the gun dropped onto the wet asphalt.

Adrian stepped into the dim light cast by a passing ship's beacon, holding Lucas by the throat against the cold metal of a container.

"Twelve years, Lucas," Adrian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "I raised you. I paid for your mother’s medical bills. I gave you a life."

"Salvatore offered me a way out!" Lucas choked out, gasping for air. "You're getting soft, Adrian! Hanging around diners, worrying about little kids... you lost your edge! Salvatore was going to kill you anyway!"

"I didn't lose my edge," Adrian whispered, bringing his face inches from Lucas’s. "I just remembered what I was fighting for. And it isn't this garbage empire."

Adrian slammed Lucas into the ground. Frankie immediately stepped forward with zip-ties, binding the traitor’s hands tightly.

"What do we do with him, Boss?" Frankie asked.

"Hand him over to the federal authorities with a complete file on Salvatore's human trafficking ring," Adrian commanded. "Salvatore thinks he can fight me in the shadows. I'm going to burn his entire world down using the law he thinks he's above."

Lucas looked up in shock. "You're talking to the feds?! You're a Moretti!"

"I am the head of this family," Adrian said, turning his back on his former driver. "And I decide when the war ends."
