Chapter 5 - The Morning After

The morning sun broke through the clouds over Chicago, casting a brilliant golden light across the city skyline.

By 8:00 AM, the story had completely dominated global news networks. Headlines across CNN, Bloomberg, and the Chicago Tribune read:

"BILLIONAIRE SEBASTIAN CALDER EXPOSES VANCE GROUP CORRUPTION: FEDERAL MARSHALS ARREST REAL ESTATE TYCOON AND SON IN MIDNIGHT RAID."

Inside the sunlit dining room of the penthouse, the atmosphere was peaceful, almost surreal.

Lily sat in a high chair that Mrs. Gable had ordered delivered at dawn, happily smearing mashed bananas across her plastic tray while letting out cheerful squeals. I sat beside her in a soft white bathrobe, sipping fresh coffee, feeling lighter than I had in nearly a year.

The heavy burden of fear, running, and hiding had finally been lifted from my shoulders.

The private elevator opened, and Sebastian stepped into the dining room. He had changed into a fresh white linen shirt and dark trousers. Despite having not slept a single minute all night, his gray eyes were bright and full of life.

He walked over to the table, looking down at Lily, whose face was completely covered in banana puree.

"Good morning, little troublemaker," Sebastian said softly, reaching out with his thumb to gently wipe a speck of banana off Lily’s nose.

Lily giggled, reaching her tiny hands up to grab Sebastian’s tie, pulling it toward her face. Instead of pulling away to save his expensive silk tie, Sebastian simply chuckled, leaning down to let her play with it.

My heart melted into a puddle right then and there.

"How are you feeling, Maya?" Sebastian asked, sitting down across from me and taking a cup of black coffee from Mrs. Gable.

"I feel like I'm dreaming," I admitted, looking at him with endless gratitude. "Arthur called me twenty minutes ago. He said the federal prosecutor has denied bail for both Marcus and Julian Vance. Their legal assets are frozen, and Veronica Hale has agreed to testify against them in exchange for a plea deal."

"They won't be bothering you ever again," Sebastian confirmed, taking a slow sip of his coffee. "The Vance Group will be broken up and liquidated by the federal government to pay restitution to their victims."

I looked down at my coffee cup, suddenly feeling a quiet flutter of anxiety in my chest.

Now that the threat was gone, now that Julian was behind bars... what happened next? My job as a waitress at Calder House was gone. Veronica had ruined the restaurant's schedule, and I couldn't possibly return to serving tables after everything that had happened.

"Sebastian," I said softly, my voice trembling slightly. "I don't know how I will ever repay you for what you've done. You saved my daughter’s life. You saved mine. But... I know I need to start making plans to find an apartment and get a new job—"

"No," Sebastian interrupted flatly, setting his coffee cup down with a sharp clink.

I blinked, startled. "What?"

Sebastian leaned across the small table, his gray eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that took my breath away.

"You are not going back to a laundromat apartment, Maya," Sebastian said firmly. "And you are not looking for a job as a waitress."

"Sebastian, I can't stay in your penthouse forever," I protested gently. "You have a life, a business empire... I can't just leech off your kindness."

"Who said anything about leeching?" Sebastian asked, a soft, rare smile appearing at the corners of his lips.

He pulled a thick leather folder out from his briefcase and set it on the table in front of me.

"What is this?" I asked, opening the folder.

Inside were legal incorporation papers for a brand-new non-profit foundation titled: The Elena & Lily Delgado Foundation for Working Mothers.

My eyes widened as I read the document. "A foundation?"

"A fifty-million-dollar endowment," Sebastian explained smoothly. "To build safe, subsidized housing and free daycare centers for working single mothers across Chicago—so no mother ever has to hide her child in a linen room to keep her job."

Tears sprang to my eyes once again. "Sebastian... this is amazing..."

"And you are the Chief Executive Director," Sebastian added, resting his chin on his hands. "You will manage the foundation, choose the locations, and oversee the programs. You have a degree in early childhood development that you were forced to abandon when Julian trapped you, correct?"

"How did you know that?" I gasped.

"I read your full employee file last night," Sebastian admitted softly, reaching across the table to cover my hand with his large, warm palm. "You are overqualified, brilliant, and you have the heart of a lioness. There is no one else in this city I trust more to run this foundation."

I looked at his warm hand covering mine, then looked into his eyes.

"And... where will Lily and I live?" I whispered.

Sebastian’s thumb gently caressed the back of my hand.

"You will live right here," Sebastian murmured, his voice dropping to a low, seductive whisper. "With me. Unless... you don't want to be near a boss who falls in love with his waitresses."

My heart did a violent, joyous somersault inside my chest. "Sebastian... are you serious?"

"I have never been more serious about anything in my life, Maya," Sebastian said softly, standing up and pulling me out of my chair, wrapping his powerful arms around my waist, lifting me off my feet until my eyes were level with his.

"From the moment I saw you standing in my basement office, terrified yet brave enough to face a billionaire for your child... I knew my life would never be the same again. I love you, Maya Delgado."

"I love you too, Sebastian," I cried, throwing my arms around his neck and pressing my lips against his in a passionate, miraculous kiss that sealed our future forever.

Below us, Lily let out a loud, joyous squeal, clapping her messy, banana-covered hands together as Mrs. Gable laughed softly from the kitchen doorway.
