Chapter 4 - The Midnight Raid

"What do you mean they're at the precinct?!" I cried out, terror surging back through my veins like ice water.

Arthur pulled up a live police dispatch monitor on his tablet. "Marcus Vance bribed Judge Sterling to sign an ex-parte emergency custody order at 11:30 PM. Vance presented falsified police reports claiming you abandoned Lily in an unsafe building and that you're an unfit, mentally unstable mother."

"That's a complete lie!" I shouted, tears spilling over my eyelashes. "I have never left my daughter! I worked three jobs to feed her!"

"It doesn't matter if it's a lie to them, Maya," Arthur explained grimly. "An ex-parte order means the judge signed it without hearing your side of the story. Armed Cook County Sheriff deputies are en route to this building right now to execute the warrant and take Lily into state custody until a hearing next week."

"Next week?!" I gasped, clutching my stomach as nausea hit me. "If Julian gets her for one hour, he will put her on a private jet and take her out of the country!"

Sebastian didn't hesitate. He pulled out his phone and dialed a direct line to his head of security, Marcus Cole.

"Cole," Sebastian commanded, his voice as sharp as a diamond edge. "Lock down the main lobby and the elevator banks. Initiate Protocol Sigma. No one—and I mean no one, including law enforcement—enters the residential towers without a federal court stay."

"Sebastian!" Arthur warned, standing up from the table. "You can't physically block Cook County Sheriff deputies! That's interference with law enforcement! They will arrest you!"

"Let them try," Sebastian growled, his gray eyes flashing with lethal fury. "They are acting on a fraudulent, unconstitutional warrant bought with dirty money. I will hold this building until Judge Thorne signs our federal injunction."

He turned to me, grabbing my shoulders with reassuring strength. "Maya, go to the nursery with Mrs. Gable. Stay inside the panic room behind the master wardrobe. Do not open the door for anyone except me."

"Sebastian, please don't get arrested for us!" I begged, my hand grasping his wrist. "If they take you to jail, who will protect Lily?!"

Sebastian leaned down, pressing his warm lips firmly against my forehead in a brief, possessive kiss that sent a surge of electricity straight to my heart.

"They can't hold me in a cell for more than an hour, Maya," Sebastian promised softly against my skin. "Now go. Protect our girl."

I ran down the long corridor toward the nursery. Mrs. Gable was already waiting, holding a wide-awake, peaceful Lily wrapped in her favorite yellow blanket. Together, we stepped into the master bedroom, where Mrs. Gable pressed a hidden panel behind the mahogany wardrobe.

The heavy wooden wall slid open smoothly, revealing a reinforced, steel-lined safe room equipped with independent air filtration, emergency monitors, and comfortable leather seating.

We stepped inside, and the steel door sealed shut with a heavy, pneumatic HISSS.

On the wall-mounted security monitor inside the safe room, I watched the live feed from the building’s main lobby floor thirty stories below.

Four armed sheriff deputies accompanied by Marcus Vance and Julian Vance stormed through the glass entrance doors of the Calder Building.

Julian Vance looked disheveled and furious, his dark eyes wide with cruel anticipation. Beside him, his father Marcus Vance—a tall, silver-haired man in a tailored fur-collared coat—walked with the arrogant strut of a man who believed he owned the city.

Sebastian Calder stood alone in the center of the marble lobby, flanked only by Arthur Pendelton. He wore no jacket, his shirt sleeves rolled up, his hands thrust calmly into his trouser pockets as fifty armed private guards lined the balcony behind him.

"Sebastian Calder!" Deputy Commander Walsh barked, holding up a official red-stamped document. "We have a court order issued by Judge Harold Sterling for the immediate surrender of the minor child, Lily Delgado! Step aside and allow us access to the elevator!"

Sebastian didn't flinch. He didn't even take his hands out of his pockets.

"You have a piece of paper bought for fifty thousand dollars in cash paid to Harold Sterling’s offshore account in Nassau, Deputy Walsh," Sebastian said, his booming voice carrying across the high marble ceilings of the lobby like thunder. "And if you take one step toward those elevator doors, you will be committing a federal felony."

Julian Vance stepped forward, pointing a finger aggressively at Sebastian’s face. "Where is she, Calder?! Where is my daughter?! Give her to me, or I will tear this building down brick by brick!"

Sebastian slowly turned his head to look at Julian. A look of total, disgust filled his eyes.

"You left an eight-month-old child on a cold concrete staircase while fleeing a crime scene, Julian," Sebastian said, his voice dropping to a icy whisper that chilled even the deputies standing nearby. "You aren't a father. You're a coward who hides behind his daddy's money."

Julian’s face flushed bright red with humiliation and rage. "Arrest him!" Julian shrieked at the deputies. "Arrest him for obstruction!"

Deputy Walsh stepped forward, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. "Mr. Calder, you leave me no choice. You're under arrest—"

BEEP-BEEP-BEEP!

Before the handcuffs could click around Sebastian’s wrists, Arthur Pendelton’s satellite phone rang violently. Arthur swiped the screen, held it to his ear for three seconds, and then activated the loudspeaker.

"Deputy Walsh! This is Chief Federal Judge Elizabeth Thorne!" a stern, commanding female voice boomed through the lobby speakers from Washington D.C. "I have just issued an emergency Federal Ex-Parte Injunction staying all proceedings of the 1st Municipal District! Judge Sterling’s custody warrant is hereby declared VOID AND UNCONSTITUTIONAL!"

Marcus Vance’s face turned gray. "What?!"

"Furthermore," Judge Thorne’s voice continued with absolute federal authority, "Federal Marshals are currently en route to arrest Marcus Vance and Julian Vance on charges of federal RICO conspiracy, witness tampering, and attempted parental abduction across state lines! Deputy Walsh, if you do not immediately detain Marcus and Julian Vance, you will be indicted as co-conspirators before sunrise!"

Deputy Walsh froze. He looked at the federal order flashing on Arthur’s tablet, then looked at Marcus Vance.

Without hesitating, Deputy Walsh turned around, grabbed Marcus Vance by the arms, and slammed him against the marble pillar.

"Hey! Get your hands off me!" Marcus Vance roared, struggling against the deputies. "Do you know who I am?!"

"You're under federal arrest, Mr. Vance," Deputy Walsh growled, snapping the steel handcuffs around Marcus’s wrists.

Beside him, two other deputies tackled Julian Vance to the floor as he tried to run for the glass doors, pinning him to the polished marble as steel cuffs clicked around his hands.

Inside the safe room, I covered my mouth with both hands, sobbing hysterically—not from fear, but from profound, miraculous joy.

On the screen, Sebastian Calder didn't smile. He simply adjusted his shirt cuffs, turned toward the elevator camera, and looked directly into the lens—looking directly at me.

"It's over, Maya," his quiet voice whispered through the safe room intercom. "Come out. You're free."
