Chapter 1 - The Erased Six Minutes

The silence inside Sebastian Calder’s subterranean office felt heavy enough to crush bone. The sharp humming of the server rack beneath the walnut desk sounded like a ticking bomb as the security chief brought up the video playback.

On the high-definition wall monitor, the black-and-white feed of the service corridor flashed to life. The timestamp read 4:58 PM.

Veronica Hale stood near the edge of the screen, wringing her hands, her eyes darting nervously toward the ceiling cameras. She wasn't preparing for dinner service. She was waiting.

At 5:02 PM, a tall man wearing a dark wool coat and a low-brimmed cap entered from the alley door—a door that required an manager's keycard to open from the outside.

I gasped, my hands tightening instinctively around Lily. The newborn blanket slipped from her tiny shoulder, exposing her soft pink skin to the cool air of the basement.

The man in the video turned toward the camera just enough for the flickering fluorescent light to catch the left side of his face.

"Julian," I whispered, my voice choking on the name that had brought me nothing but terror for nearly a year.

It was Julian Vance—my ex-fiancé, Lily’s biological father, and the son of one of Chicago’s most ruthless real estate moguls. Nine months ago, when I discovered his family’s business was built on illegal land seizures and human trafficking kickbacks, I broke our engagement and fled in the middle of the night. When Julian realized I was pregnant, he made it clear: A Vance heir does not grow up in a laundromat apartment. Give me the child, or I will destroy you.

On the screen, Julian slipped Veronica a thick white envelope. Veronica slid the envelope directly into her apron pocket. Then, while Veronica held the linen room door wide open, Julian stepped inside.

Twenty seconds later, Julian walked back out. In his arms was the small, bundled shape of my daughter.

"Oh my God," I sobbed, tears blurring my vision as the horrifying reality slammed into my chest. "He took her... Veronica helped him steal my baby!"

"Keep watching," Sebastian commanded softly, his voice devoid of emotion, yet carrying a terrifying, sub-zero edge that made the security guards shudder.

On the screen, Julian carried Lily toward the alley exit. But before he could swipe his card to open the back door, tiny eight-month-old Lily reached up and swiped her yellow rattle across Julian’s face, catching him square in the eye.

The shock made Julian drop his grip. Lily slipped from his arms, landing on a pile of soft dirty laundry bags piled near the basement stairs. At the same instant, the kitchen door at the far end of the hall burst open as a line cook carried a stack of fresh sheet pans out.

Panicked by the noise and fearing discovery, Julian didn't stop to retrieve the baby. He shoved the alley door open and fled into the downpour outside.

Left alone on the pile of laundry, tiny Lily had crawled toward the only light available—the warm glow seeping from beneath Sebastian Calder’s basement office door. She had wriggled down the carpeted stairs one by one until she bumped against his door, dropping her rattle on the first step.

The video feed froze.

Sebastian turned slowly in his leather chair. His gray eyes locked onto Veronica Hale.

Veronica’s knees trembled so violently she had to press her back against the oak door frame to remain upright. "Mr. Calder... please... you don't understand! The Vance family... they hold the mortgage on this building! Julian's father threatened to foreclose on Calder House if I didn't help him get his daughter back! I had no choice!"

"You always have a choice, Ms. Hale," Sebastian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. He stood up slowly, adjusting his silver cufflinks. "You chose to sell a mother's child for cash and corporate immunity."

He walked over to the security guards.

"Take her phone. Lock her in the upper holding room until the police arrive. And notify my personal legal team. I want Veronica Hale charged with felony kidnapping, conspiracy, and corporate espionage before the sun sets."

"Yes, Mr. Calder!" the guards barked, grabbing Veronica by the arms.

"Mr. Calder, please!" Veronica shrieked as she was dragged up the stairs, her manicured nails scraping against the wall. "Julian Vance won't stop! His family owns half the judges in Cook County! You can't protect her!"

The heavy door slammed shut, cutting off her screams.

Quiet descended upon the office once more. I sat frozen in the chair, holding Lily against my chest, tears dripping onto her soft brown curls. The shock, the terror, and the absolute relief of holding my daughter overwhelmed my senses.

Sebastian walked over and stood beside my chair. He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a crisp, white silk handkerchief, extending it toward me.

"She’s safe now, Maya," Sebastian said softly. His voice held a gentleness that seemed entirely foreign to the feared billionaire owner of Calder House. "No one is taking her from this building."

I took the handkerchief and wiped my face, looking up into his intense gray eyes. "You don't understand, Mr. Calder. Veronica was right about Julian’s family. The Vance Group is worth hundreds of millions. They have politicians, police captains, and high-powered lawyers in their pockets. When Julian realizes he failed today, he will use every legal—and illegal—tool he has to take Lily away from me."

Sebastian leaned his hip against the edge of his massive desk, crossing his arms over his chest. A subtle, dangerous smirk played on his lips.

"The Vance Group may worth hundreds of millions, Ms. Delgado," Sebastian murmured quietly. "But Calder Holdings is worth billions. And unlike Marcus Vance, I don't buy judges. I buy the banks that hold their debts."

May you like

He crouched down until his eyes were level with mine, staring at tiny Lily, who was now clutching his thumb with her little hand.

"You brought your daughter to work because you had no one else to trust," Sebastian said gently. "From this minute on, you don't have to hide her in linen closets anymore."
