Chapter 10 - The Legacy of Love

Two years later.

It was a crisp, warm autumn afternoon in Chicago.

The Calder Estate on the North Shore was surrounded by towering oak trees painted in brilliant shades of orange, red, and gold. The expansive green lawn stretched all the way down to the blue waters of Lake Michigan.

In the middle of the sunny backyard, a beautiful wooden playhouse stood surrounded by flower beds.

Three-year-old Lily was running across the soft grass, wearing a tiny yellow cardigan and boots, chasing our playful golden retriever puppy while holding a soft yellow rattle in her hand.

"Catch me, Buster!" Lily giggled, her bright laugh echoing across the lawn.

I sat on a comfortable wooden porch swing on the veranda, wearing a soft cream cashmere sweater, sipping a warm cup of apple cider.

Beside me, cradled securely in my arms, was our three-month-old baby son, Leo Sebastian Calder, fast asleep with his tiny fist resting against my chest, his soft brown hair blowing gently in the autumn breeze.

Heavy, familiar footsteps sounded on the wooden porch.

Sebastian walked out of the house, wearing a simple navy sweater and jeans. He had stepped back from daily operations at Calder Holdings, leaving Arthur Pendelton and a team of trusted executives to run the business so he could spend his days at home with us.

He walked over to the porch swing, dropping down onto the cushion beside me.

He leaned down, pressing a gentle kiss onto sleeping baby Leo’s forehead, then leaned over to kiss my lips with a sweet, lingering tenderness that still made my heart flutter just as fast as it did the first day we met.

"How is our little man doing?" Sebastian asked softly, wrapping his broad arm around my shoulders, pulling me close against his side.

"He just finished his bottle," I smiled, resting my head against his shoulder. "He’s as peaceful as his father."

Sebastian looked out across the lawn at Lily, who was currently tumbling safely onto the grass with the puppy, her joyful laughter ringing out like music under the golden autumn sky.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out an old, polished object, setting it gently on the small table beside our swing.

It was the original yellow rattle—the one Lily had dropped on the basement stairs of Calder House three years ago. Sebastian had framed it in a small, clear acrylic display case with a gold plaque engraved with the words:

“The key that opened my heart. Nov 12.”

I looked at the rattle, then looked up at my husband’s breathtaking profile.

"Do you ever think about that Tuesday afternoon at 5:10 PM?" I asked softly, tracing my fingers along his jawline. "When I was terrified, hiding Lily between crates of tablecloths, thinking my life was over?"

Sebastian turned his head, looking down at me with gray eyes filled with an abundance of warmth, peace, and eternal devotion.

"I think about it every single day, Maya," Sebastian murmured gently, kissing my hair. "It was the moment my real life began. You thought you were hiding a baby from the world... but you were actually bringing me the greatest gift God ever created."

I smiled, reaching up to wrap my fingers through his, resting our hands over sleeping baby Leo’s chest.

Across the sunny lawn, Lily ran up the porch steps, holding a bright red autumn leaf in her hand, her eyes shining with pure joy.

"Dada! Mommy! Look!" Lily squealed, holding the leaf up to us.

Sebastian smiled, reaching out with his free arm to scoop Lily up onto his lap, pulling all three of us—his wife, his daughter, and his baby son—into one massive, warm, impenetrable embrace.

The autumn sun set over the lake, casting a magnificent, everlasting golden light over our family—a family built not on fear or money, but on an unbroken bond of love that would last for all eternity.
