Chapter 5 - THE RECKONING AT THE DOCKS

The following week was a whirlwind of structural changes across the Moretti syndicate.

With Dante locked away in an underground vault and his conspirators systematically rounded up across New York and Chicago, Alejandro executed a complete purge of the family’s old guard. The illicit smuggling routes were closed, replaced by clean international logistics, medical supply imports, and legitimate shipping operations.

The news of a four-year-old maid’s daughter saving the legendary Harbor Boss spread through the underworld like wildfire. Some rival cartels viewed the child as Alejandro’s weak spot—a soft target to leverage against the Don.

They quickly learned how wrong they were.

On a chilly Thursday afternoon, a faction of the Russian syndicate from Chicago—allies of Dante who stood to lose millions from the shipping route closures—sent three hitmen to intercept Emma’s medical transport van on its way to the hospital for her immunology appointment.

The Russian hitmen surrounded the armored van at a red light in Midtown Manhattan, drawing heavy weapons.

They thought they were ambushing an easy target.

Instead, the side doors of the transport van slid open. Four elite Moretti enforcers, led personally by Alejandro, opened fire with ruthless precision. Within forty seconds, all three Russian hitmen were disarmed and pinned against the pavement.

Alejandro stepped out of the back of the van, wearing a long trench coat. He walked up to the Russian commander, who was bleeding on the asphalt.

“Tell your boss in Chicago,” Alejandro said, his voice cold enough to freeze water, “that if a single one of his men so much as breathes in the direction of my ward, I will buy his entire syndicate and turn it into a cemetery.”

The message was received loud and clear. Within twenty-four hours, the Chicago cartel sent a formal letter of surrender, agreeing to all of Alejandro’s terms and paying a five-million-dollar restitution fee directly into Emma’s trust fund.

Back at the estate, Emma’s life had settled into a world of magic and comfort.

The entire third floor of the mansion was converted into a state-of-the-art playroom and medical suite. A private tutor was hired to teach Emma, while Elena was appointed as the Chief Director of the newly established Emma Moretti Medical Foundation—a hundred-million-dollar charity dedicated to providing free allergy medicine, EpiPens, and emergency care to low-income families across the nation.

Elena, who had spent years hiding in fear from landlords and debt collectors, was now one of the most respected philanthropists in the city. She sat in a bright, high-ceilinged office on the second floor of the estate, managing millions of dollars in medical grants.

Every afternoon at 4:00 PM, Alejandro stopped all syndicate meetings, put down his files, and walked up to the West Wing.

He sat on a small wooden chair at a child’s table, drinking pretend tea from plastic cups while Emma showed him her latest finger paintings.

“This one is you, Mr. Moretti,” Emma declared one afternoon, holding up a paper with a giant black monster wearing a red tie.

Alejandro picked up the drawing, studying it seriously. “I see. Am I really that scary?”

“No,” Emma smiled, reaching out to pat his cheek with a paint-smudged hand. “You’re the guard dog. You keep the bad men away.”

Alejandro looked at the little girl, his heart swelling with a fierce, unconditional love he hadn't felt in decades. “Yes, Emma. I am your guard dog. And no bad man will ever come near you again.”
