Chapter 1 - THE SILENT WITNESS IN THE BOOKSHELF

The mechanical click of the EpiPen echoed off the mahogany walls of the study like a rifle shot. Alejandro Moretti’s chest heaved upward, a ragged, violent gasp of life tearing through his throat as epinephrine surged through his failing circulatory system. The purple hue on his lips slowly retreated, replaced by a flushed, desperate red as his airway unlocked.
Four-year-old Emma stayed on her knees beside him, her tiny hands trembling as she held the spent blue-and-orange tube against his tailored trousers. Her heart hammered against her ribs, but she didn't run.
Alejandro’s dark eyes—legendary across the North American underworld for their cold, unyielding power—snapped open. They were no longer wild and unfocused; they were sharp, lethal, and focused entirely on the small child kneeling in front of him. His hand, heavy and scarred, tightened gently around Emma’s wrist. It wasn't a grip meant to hurt, but a anchor keeping him tethered to the living world.
“Emma!” a frantic voice shrieked from the hallway.
Elena, Emma’s mother, burst into the study. She wore her faded blue maid’s uniform, her apron stained with dishwater, her hair falling out of its messy bun. When she saw her four-year-old daughter kneeling beside the feared Don of the Moretti syndicate—surrounded by shattered glass, spilled wine, and armed men—Elena dropped to her knees, her face drained of all color.
“Emma! Oh God, no! Please, Mr. Moretti, don't hurt her!” Elena sobbed, reaching out to pull Emma into her arms. “She’s only four! She didn't mean to trespass!”
“Mama, he couldn't breathe,” Emma whispered, holding up the empty EpiPen. “I used my bunny medicine.”
Alejandro slowly pushed himself up into a sitting position, leaning his heavy back against the mahogany desk. He raised one finger, silencing the guards who had drawn their weapons. His voice, raspy and damaged from the acute laryngeal edema, cut through the room.
“She... saved my life, Elena,” Alejandro croaked, pressing a hand to his throat.
The two guards standing near the doorway—Viktor and Lucas—exchanged a brief, panicked glance. Lucas, a towering man with a scar running across his left jaw, took a half-step toward the desk, his hand hovering dangerously close to his holstered 9mm pistol.
“Boss,” Lucas stammered, his forehead slick with sweat. “The child... she injected you with an unknown substance! We should call the estate doctors immediately! We don't know what she put in your bloodstream!”
“It was epinephrine,” Alejandro spat, his dark eyes locking onto Lucas with a intensity that made the guard flinch. “Synthetic adrenaline. I have a lethal peanut allergy... something my inner circle knows, but my private chef ensures never enters this kitchen.”
Alejandro turned his head slowly, looking at the spilled glass of Chateau Margaux on the Persian rug. Beneath the rich, fruity aroma of the vintage wine lay the faint, telltale odor of crushed peanut oil extract—concentrated, lethal, and invisible to the naked eye.
“Viktor,” Alejandro commanded, his voice growing stronger by the second as the drug did its work. “Lock the doors.”
Viktor hesitated for a microsecond before reaching for the heavy brass handle. “Yes, Don Alejandro.”
“And Lucas,” Alejandro added softly, leaning forward. “Why are you staring at my bookshelf?”
Lucas froze. His right hand twitched. “I... I’m not looking at the bookshelf, Boss. I’m just checking the perimeter—”
“Lie to me again,” Alejandro growled, “and you won't leave this room on your feet.”
Alejandro stood up. Though his body was still shaking from the shock of severe anaphylaxis, he towered over the room like a dark titan. He walked past Lucas, stepped up to the second shelf of the oak bookcase, and pulled out a leather-bound copy of Dante’s Inferno.
Concealed within the hollowed-out spine of the book was a microscopic, high-definition pinhole camera, its tiny red LED light blinking silently.
“A secondary optical feed,” Alejandro murmured, holding the camera between his thumb and forefinger. “Connected directly to an off-site cloud server. Someone wanted a live video feed of my death.”
He turned around, holding the tiny red light up in the dim firelight.
“Who paid you, Lucas?” Alejandro asked smoothly. “Was it my brother, Dante? Or was it the Russian cartel in Chicago?”

Lucas’s eyes went wild with desperation. Realizing the video feed had already recorded him standing over Alejandro’s collapsing body without calling for medical aid, Lucas drew his firearm.
“To hell with this!” Lucas screamed, aiming the barrel directly at Alejandro’s chest.
