Chapter 3 - THE WEST WING FORTRESS

By midnight, the heavy rain outside the Moretti estate had turned into a howling winter storm. Inside the West Wing of the mansion, however, the atmosphere was entirely different.

Emma was tucked into a massive, king-sized canopy bed adorned with silk sheets and plush velvet blankets. On the nightstand beside her sat a brand-new pink rabbit backpack, fully stocked with ten fresh auto-injectors, along with a custom medical bracelet engraved with her name and emergency contact details.

Elena sat on the edge of the bed, running her fingers through her daughter’s soft hair. Her eyes were red from crying, overwhelmed by the sudden, terrifying shift in their lives. Three hours ago, they were living in a damp, windowless servant quarter in the basement, worrying about where their next meal would come from. Now, they were residing in the safest, most luxurious wing of a fifty-million-dollar estate.

The heavy oak door of the bedroom opened softly.

Alejandro walked in, dressed in a comfortable charcoal sweater and trousers, leaving his usual imposing suit behind. He carried a silver tray holding two mugs of hot chocolate topped with marshmallows and a glass of warm milk.

Elena immediately stood up, bowing her head. “Mr. Moretti—”

“Sit, Elena,” Alejandro said gently, setting the tray down on the coffee table near the fireplace. “In this wing, you do not bow to me.”

He walked over to the bed and looked down at Emma, who was staring intently at the hot chocolate.

“Is it safe for me?” Emma asked, tilting her head. “Does it have nuts?”

“It was made in a completely nut-free kitchen by my personal chef, inspected by Dr. Chen himself,” Alejandro assured her, picking up a mug and handing it to her. “I give you my word as a Moretti.”

Emma took a tiny sip, her eyes lighting up with pure delight as the warm chocolate melted on her tongue. “It’s yummy.”

Alejandro pulled an armchair up to the side of the bed and sat down. He looked at Elena.

“Dr. Chen reviewed Emma’s medical files,” Alejandro began, his tone becoming serious. “Her allergy to peanuts and tree nuts is severe—class five anaphylactic sensitivity. How were you managing this on a maid’s salary?”

Elena swallowed hard, her knuckles turning white as she gripped her skirt. “I... I skipped meals, Mr. Moretti. I bought expired injectors from overseas pharmacies online because American insurance wouldn't cover us without a permanent address. That injector she used on you today... I spent my entire monthly wage on it last week.”

Alejandro’s eyes darkened with a quiet, lethal rage—not directed at Elena, but at a system that forced a mother to starve just to keep her child breathing.

“That ends today,” Alejandro declared softly. “I have established a private trust fund under Emma’s name. Ten million dollars has been deposited into a high-yield account. A top pediatric immunology team from Johns Hopkins will fly in on Monday to begin experimental desensitization therapy.”

Elena gasped, covering her mouth with both hands. “Ten... ten million?! Mr. Moretti, no! We can't accept that! We are just domestic staff—”

“You are no longer staff,” Alejandro repeated firmly. “You saved my life, Elena. If Emma had not walked into that study, Dante’s men would have taken control of my estate by midnight, and you and your daughter would have been executed in the basement as collateral witnesses.”

He looked down at Emma, who was now happily licking marshmallow cream off her upper lip.

“You are family now,” Alejandro said.

Suddenly, the house’s internal alarm system chimed softly—a low, pulsating blue light flashing near the doorway.

Viktor stepped into the room, his face tense. “Don Alejandro. We have a problem at the front gate. Your brother Dante has arrived with six cars and a legal injunction signed by Judge Vance. He claims you’ve been incapacitated and is demanding entry to assume control of the family estate.”

Alejandro stood up slowly, the cold, lethal demeanor of the mafia Don returning instantly to his face.

“Dante is impatient,” Alejandro murmured. “He thinks he’s coming to claim a corpse.”

He looked down at Emma. “Stay here with your mother, little one. I have a family matter to settle.”
