Chapter 9 - The Promise Kept

Back at the estate, the evening sun bathed the marble courtyards in a warm, golden glow.
The transition was complete. Our home was no longer a fortress hiding from enemies, but a sanctuary filled with laughter, the patter of little feet, and the comforting warmth of a family that had survived the worst the underworld could throw at them.
My mother was healthy, living in her own private suite in the east wing, enjoying her golden years with her grandson.

That night, after putting Leo to sleep in his nursery, I walked out onto the second-floor balcony. The cool night breeze carried the scent of blooming jasmine from the gardens below.
Footsteps approached from behind. Strong arms wrapped around my waist, pulling me back against a warm, solid chest.
"You're standing out here in the cold again," Adrian murmured, resting his chin on my shoulder.
"I'm just breathing," I smiled, leaning back into his embrace. "It still feels like a dream sometimes. That I walked into this mansion as a desperate surrogate, and found my whole world."

Adrian turned me around in his arms, his dark eyes shining with an intensity that never faded.
"It's not a dream, Melissa," he said softly, lifting my hand and kissing the silver ring on my finger, right beside my wedding band. "It's reality. And I am never letting you go."
