Chapter 6 - Shadows Lifting

The days following the raid brought a profound sense of peace to the Moretti estate. The heavy iron gates remained, but the armed guards were no longer symbols of paranoia; they were guardians of a true home.
My mother arrived at the mansion by the end of the week, transferred directly from the hospital under Dante’s personal supervision. When she walked through the double doors and saw me holding my baby—her grandson—surrounded by luxury and safety, tears streamed down her face.
And when Adrian wheeled himself into the parlor to greet her, bowing his head respectfully and calling her Mother, any lingering doubts in her heart vanished.
"You've grown into a strong man, Adrian," my mother said, holding his hands in hers. "Gabriel would have been proud of the life you built."
"I only built the walls, Margaret," Adrian replied, looking across the room at me. "Melissa brought the life inside."
We spent the afternoons in the glass conservatory, watching Leo take his first curious steps across the plush rugs while the sunlight poured through the panes. The trauma of the past began to fade, replaced by laughter, quiet conversations over midnight coffee, and the steady, unbreakable rhythm of a family finally healing.
Yet, underground, the remnants of the old criminal underworld were still shifting.
One evening, while Adrian was reviewing restructuring documents in his study, I brought him a cup of black coffee. He looked up, rubbing his temples with a tired sigh.
"Everything alright?" I asked, setting the mug on his desk.
"Vincenzo’s associates are trying to negotiate deals with the federal prosecutors," Adrian said, spinning his wedding band—a new addition to his finger since our quiet ceremony in the private chapel three days ago. "They're offering information on remaining sleeper cells across the East Coast. It means a few more weeks of legal cleanup, and then... it's truly over."

"Good," I said, resting my hands on his shoulders and beginning to massage the tight muscles along his neck. "Because you promised me a vacation in Italy once the dust settled."
Adrian covered my hands with his, leaning his head back against me with a contented sigh. " Tuscany, vineyards, and no bodyguards within a hundred miles. It's a promise."
