Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Ring

The cold weight of the silver ring pressed against my palm as the echoes of gunfire rattled the reinforced glass of the library windows. Outside, the storm raged, throwing sheets of rain against the mansion like a desperate army. Inside, the silence between Adrian Moretti and me felt heavier than the approaching threat.
Adrian’s breath hitched. His eyes, usually sharp and calculating as he surveyed his criminal empire, were wide with a raw, terrifying disbelief. He stared at the engraved crest on the band—a rearing wolf entwined with an olive branch—the unmistakable seal of Don Gabriel Romano.
"Romano," he whispered, the name tasting like ash on his tongue. "You are Gabriel’s daughter."
"My mother hid us for nineteen years," I said, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to keep it steady. The baby stirred in my arms, fussing against the sudden spike of adrenaline in my blood. "We changed our names, our cities, our faces, running from men who wanted to finish what the betrayal started. I thought signing that surrogacy contract was a desperate gamble for money. I never dreamed I was walking right into the den of the world my father died to pull me out of."
Adrian’s hands gripped the armrests of his wheelchair so tightly his knuckles turned white. The muscles in his jaw flexed. "Your father didn't just save a boy, Melissa. He saved me. I was fourteen years old when your father took a bullet to his chest to shield me from Vincenzo’s hitmen. He bled out in the dirt of an abandoned warehouse while I watched, helpless, crippled by the same crossfire that took his legs."
A sharp gasp escaped my lips. The room seemed to tilt. The mysterious debt of honor, the ruthless reputation that people whispered about in fear—it all suddenly crystallized into a tragic, binding destiny.
"You..." I stared at him, tears stinging the corners of my eyes. "You were the boy?"
"I swore an oath on his grave that day," Adrian said, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly rasp filled with suppressed emotion. "I swore that if I ever found his family, I would spend the rest of my life protecting them. When my scouts brought you to me, when you needed money for your mother... I didn't choose a random surrogate, Melissa. I chose you because I had been searching for you for ten years."
A deafening explosion echoed through the front hall. The heavy oak doors of the study shuddered as splintering wood announced that the attackers had breached the inner perimeter.

Adrian snapped back to reality, his mafia instincts overriding the shock of the revelation. He wheeled himself forward, grabbing a heavy-duty tactical shotgun from a hidden compartment beneath his desk and shoving it into my hands with practiced precision.
"They aren't here for a simple robbery," Adrian said, his eyes burning with lethal intent. "Vincenzo found out who you are. He wants the last bloodline of the Romano family extinguished. But they will have to go through me first."
