Chapter 10 - Forever in the Shadows of Light

Ten years later.
The Moretti estate was hosting a very different kind of gathering.
Laughter echoed across the sprawling lawns as children ran through the gardens, playing tag near the fountains. Inside the grand ballroom, business leaders, philanthropists, and close friends gathered to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Moretti-Romano Foundation—an organization dedicated to helping families of fallen law enforcement officers and reforming at-risk youth.
I stood near the grand staircase, wearing an elegant emerald-silk gown, watching the room with a heart full of gratitude.
A pair of small arms wrapped around my legs. I looked down to see a ten-year-old boy with dark, intelligent eyes and a mischievous grin looking up at me.
"Mom, can I have another slice of chocolate cake before dinner?" Leo asked, batting his eyelashes just like his father used to when trying to bend the rules.
"Not a chance, young man," a deep, resonant voice answered from behind us.
Adrian walked up, leaning slightly on a sleek, ebony cane, though he hardly needed it anymore after his final reconstructive surgeries. He looked every bit the powerful patriarch, but the fierce hardness in his eyes had long since melted into warmth whenever he looked at us.
He knelt down to Leo’s eye level. "Your mother makes the rules, son. And in this house, the queen's word is absolute."
Leo rolled his eyes dramatically, laughing as he ran off to join his cousins on the lawn.
Adrian stood back up, pulling me gently against his chest. He rested his chin on the top of my head, looking out over the crowded, joyful room.
"Remember twenty-one days after he was born?" Adrian whispered into my ear, a soft smile touching his lips. "When you thought you were going to walk out those gates and never see us again?"
"I was terrified," I admitted, wrapping my arms around his waist. "I thought money was the only thing keeping us together."
Adrian tilted my chin up, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an eternal promise.

"We survived the blood, the betrayal, and the war," he said softly. "And we built an empire of love out of the ashes."
He leaned down and kissed me, deep and slow, right in the center of the brilliant hall, surrounded by the family we had fought so hard to save. The shadows of our past were gone, replaced forever by the light of a happily ever after.
