Chapter 7 - The Settlement

Three months later, the legal proceedings concluded in the Fayette County Circuit Court.

Judge Miller presided over the final settlement hearing with an expression of stern disapproval as he reviewed the extensive documentation submitted by Harrison Vance.

Nathan sat at the opposing table alone. His expensive suit was wrinkled, his posture slumped, and the arrogance that had once defined him was completely gone, replaced by a dull, hollow exhaustion. He had tried to hire a cut-rate defense attorney, but his lawyer had abandoned him the moment it became clear there were no hidden assets left to plunder.

"Mr. Sinclair," Judge Miller said, his voice echoing through the wood-paneled courtroom. "The court finds in full agreement with the plaintiff’s petition. Due to documented financial abandonment, fraudulent asset concealment, and malicious neglect of minor children, the court hereby grants Elise Sinclair sole legal and physical custody of Ethan and Lily Sinclair."

Nathan opened his mouth to protest, but Judge Miller raised a hand, cutting him off instantly.

"Furthermore," the judge continued, "all marital assets, including remaining trust disbursements and real estate holdings previously tied to Mr. Sinclair, are hereby awarded to Mrs. Sinclair as restitution for unpaid child support and marital fraud. Mr. Sinclair is ordered to complete mandatory community service and financial restitution classes. Court adjourned."
