Chapter 2 - The Anatomy of a Betrayal

The kitchen felt unbearably small as Theodore paced back and forth across the linoleum floor, his boots clicking with rhythmic fury. Margaret sat beside Elise on the sofa, holding her daughter-in-law’s trembling hands, rubbing circles into her cold skin.

"How long have you been living like this, Elise?" Margaret asked gently, though her eyes blazed with fury. "Why didn't you call us? Why didn't you tell Theodore or me that Nathan had abandoned you?"

Elise sniffled, wiping a stray tear from her cheek. "How could I? Nathan threatened me. He said if I ever told you or anyone in his family the truth, he would cut off all child support entirely. He made sure I had no access to legal representation. He told me that because the apartment lease was in his name—even though he hasn't paid a dime of rent in eight months—he could have us evicted on twenty-four hours' notice. I was trying to protect Ethan and Lily. I took a night shift cleaning office buildings downtown just to keep food on the table while Ethan watches his sister after school."

Ethan walked into the kitchen, his young face hardened with a maturity no fifteen-year-old should ever have to bear. "It’s true, Grandpa. I’ve been working stock at the grocery store on weekends. Dad told us we were a burden. He told me that real men don't drag their families down, and since we were holding back his career, he was doing us a favor by leaving."

Margaret felt a physical pain in her chest, as if someone had plunged a dagger straight into her heart. This was the son she had raised, the boy she had put through college at the University of Kentucky, the man she had believed was a devoted husband and father.

"He told you that?" Theodore asked, his voice shaking with suppressed rage. He stopped pacing and looked directly at his grandson. "Ethan, look at me. Your father is a coward. But you are not a burden. Your mother is a saint. And as of this exact second, everything is going to change."

Theodore reached into his tailored wool coat, pulled out his smartphone, and tapped the screen. He hit speakerphone and dialed a ten-digit number.

"Dad, what are you doing?" Elise asked, panic flashing in her eyes. "If Nathan finds out you're here—"

"Let him find out," Theodore growled. "It's time my son learned what happens when you cross the Sinclair family."
