Chapter 7 - The Arrest and the Reckoning

The front doors were kicked open as armed state troopers and federal investigators swept into the grand foyer with weapons drawn.

"State Police! Nobody move! Hands where we can see them!" the lead captain bellowed.

Richard immediately raised his hands, trying to flash his familiar corporate smile. "Officers, thank God you've arrived. My brother-in-law has suffered a psychotic break and is holding us at gunpoint—"

"Richard Miller, keep your mouth shut," the lead detective interrupted coldly, shoving Richard against the marble column and slamming hand-cuffs onto his wrists. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, attempted murder of minors, child endangerment, and wire fraud."

"What?! This is a outrage! You can't touch me! Do you know who my legal council is?!" Richard screamed as he was dragged toward the door, his expensive suit rumpled and ruined.

Hilda tried to slip quietly toward the service hallway, but two state troopers tackled her to the polished floor, securing her wrists in heavy plastic restraints.

"You're all making a horrible mistake!" Hilda shrieked, her icy, refined composure replaced by desperate panic. "Marcus Alvarez is a monster! He's the one who let them starve!"

"Save your breath for the prosecutor, Ms. Dawson," the detective said, picking up the biohazard bag containing the digitalis vials. "Our forensic team has already verified the contents."

Dr. Vance was stripped of his medical bag, handcuffed, and led away alongside Richard's hired security personnel as co-conspirators.

As the convoy of police cruisers sped away into the darkness, their fading sirens left behind a deep, profound silence. The long, terrifying nightmare that had gripped my home was finally over. The predators who had invaded my family and poisoned my children were going to pay for every second of suffering they caused.

I turned around to face Sarah, who was wiping away heavy tears of relief.

"Thank you, Sarah," I said, my voice thick with emotion. "If you hadn't come to that nursery window... if you hadn't risked everything to feed my girls... I would have lost them forever."

"Elena loved you and those sweet girls more than her own life, Marcus," Sarah whispered, stepping forward to pull me into a tight hug. "I only did what she would have done."

"You don't have to hide in the dark anymore," I said, looking her in the eyes. "This home belongs to you now, too."
